@Europeans: customs-free limit will be raised
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:07:12 AM »
When you order something froum outside to the EU you have to pay customs (Zoll) (3.5% on value+shipping) and VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer, EUSt) (19% on value+shipping+customs) on it.

When the value+shipping of the package is less than 22€ you pay neither. From December, 1st this limit will be raised to 150€ which means importing DVDs becomes way cheaper.

Good news for you, if my country could be raise is limit too it would be a good thing. Here it's just 20 CAN$, so unless the seller agree to write the wrong price the chances are high that we will have to pay the taxes. But, sometimes the worker at the border sleep and the package pass anyway. Not that the cost to pay is as high than in Europe, here it's only a 5$ fix price + federal taxes (6%) + provincial taxes (8%)

Wow, from 22€ to 150€  :o That's a lot! Granted I have no idea what a "€" is or what it's worth  :-[ but to go from 22 to 150  is a huge increase and what will most likely be a significant loss of revenue for the government.

Is there a reason for this?

1 EUR = 1.5690 USD
1 USD = 0.6373 EUR

1 Big Mac = 2.75 EUR in Germany

;)

From http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2008:085:0001:0002:EN:PDF

Quote
The value limit of ECU 22 set out in Article 27 of
Regulation (EEC) No 918/83 has not been increased
since 1991, whereas at the same time customs duties
have been significantly reduced or even abolished.
Accordingly, it is appropriate to increase the value limit
for consignments of negligible value.
