An interesting read. I can't believe they had people making chainlink armour for Lord of the Rings for two years.

I think  would have just quit my job without pay had I known what the secretary for The Shining was going to have to go through.
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

I knew that from the featurettes on the extended edition sets. Supposedly they rubbed off their fingerprints doing so, too.

I read the article a couple of times and have to say I am not sure what they were going for.  It seems like some kind of outrage but for me this level of detail just shows the commitment the director has for his/her story.

For simple things like "Shawn of the Dead" I doubt that a lot of work went into the bits.  They probably came up with the bits while they were actually developing the script/scenes.  Man I would have loved to be a fly on the wall then <G>.  As for "Lord of the Rings" take that detail and then look at possibly 3 of the greatest films of the genre ever made.

It is the detail, to me, that makes the film in many cases ... especially when the film in question is technical in nature.
Thank you
David

The article (IMO) was just saying that people should know just how much work goes into intricate details. You might not have realised so we'll point some out to you. If you ever get a chance, the commentary on Shaun of the Dead is full of homage info.

I got a few books on the making of Lords of the Rings before...and watched some extras.  I knew there was a lot of detail to stuff.

There is in the Harry Potter movies too.  For the Great Hall, they made the floors like they would have been done when an older castle type building like that was built.  They could have just used some sort of fake stuff - it was mentioned in some of my books and even an extra I think, but I can't remember what it was - but they went with real stone or marble or whatever it is.  I just can't remember exactly what it is now.  And it lasted through the filming of all the movies.

Often the detail will also help the actors to immerse themselves in the world.

For Untouchables Robert De Niro had the same silk underwear made for himself which Al Capone supposedly wore. Obviously not even seen in the film, but it helped him to understand the character, I guess.

I think I heard about other actors doing things like that..not necessarily underwear..but had identical outfits made ...same material..that sort of thing.  Can't remember who now at the moment though.

Well, there is the statement, "You had to be there in order to fully understand" which holds true to almost any situation. You have to have to replicate authentically if order to come closest to "being there" or to "walk in another man's shoes.
