Do some companies even read what quotes they use?

Here is a review I wrote for Kingdom of Gladiators last year:
http://www.dvdcompare.net/review.php?rid=2553

Well, just found out a snippet was used for the case - but I somehow doubt the company even read it properly:

The bit they took it from was a part of the overall section so you can get the context:
Quote
The acting and fight choreography are unbelievably poor, even for a low budget movie but the score and scenery sometimes combats that at times though not enough to recommend it to anyone. Picture quality is surprisingly good and audio adequate.

That's not all though. My review was for the UK release from Kaleidoscope... It's quoted on the USA release from SKD. Morons. :hysterical:

At least they didn't create one

Probably was the best quote they could find to be honest.

They didn't create one, but I'm a little annoyed they quoted us with regards to picture and audio when it was for a different release... I'll be e-mailing them tomorrow about that!

Oh Sam stop complaining - at least the website got some publicity!  :tease:

If you email them to protest - maybe they'll send you a copy of this DVD to compensate you.

Could be worst, they didn't attach your name to the quote. Imagine if the quality of that US DVD was awfull the "repercussion" on your credibility as a reviewer.

This is what I mean. It might be VHS quality for all I know and could look bad on the site. We're having a laugh about it on dvdcompare though in the staff forum.

Seriously though, do you think them taking your review out of context will hurt your website at all?

I'd be surprised if this sold well to be honest.

It's cool that they were willing to use a quote from the site at all. Kudos.  Though it begs the question, "Why did they pick it?" Was this the only revire on the Internet? An E&R-reputation you unfortunately have not, my friend.
I have a collection.
It can be found here.

Sam, hey asked for permission to use the quote, right...?

To my understanding they are not allowed to "just quote". They need the author's permission. That is why often the sources of the quotes seem rather obscure. I heard one movie once just used the best mentions from Twitter they could find :slaphead:

Nope, they never asked permission and they don't have to as it comes under fair use.

Yeah, cool they used it at all, but we have also been quoted in Sony's blu-ray 'look and sound of awesome' catalogue and in Disney's prmotional stuff among others.

Well, I had heard this in regards to video games (IGN) where I understood they need to be asked if the publishers want to use quotes from them. Maye it's different there.

Now I wonder if they could just listen to a review in the radio and write own quotes, even taking those out of context?

Sam, did you guys ever take note of the first/oldest existing DVD you ever found with one of your quotes?
