They're not real guests Laure.  It's Inktomi's search engine that does that.  When it finds a site it starts scanning it with a lot of robots.  On one of my other forums I got a "Max online" of 101 because Inktomi's robots "hit me" with over 90 engines at a time.

They're search engine robots, just like the google ones except that they're way more intrusive.  They don't seem to care much about how much they can crawl a web site when they start scanning it.

If I'm not mistaking Inktomi's search engine is used by Microsoft for search.msn.com

They scan the site to refresh their search engines.

I know the "problem", my who's online list looks similar: http://startrek-forum.doena-soft.de/forum/online.php?pp=100

Yes, but why would I want to do that? I want to be found and if new (possible) members find the forum via an old topic, where's the harm?

Maybe for traffic reasons. At least we had to restrict the web spiders in our German Profiler forum at some point because of traffic issues. I do not know if we still do so. I don't think so.
Or maybe only restrict bots which are as intrusive as the MSN one.

Inktomi's bots seem to be that intrusive only when they find your site for the first time.  After that initial scan the bots are more "civilized"
