How much do you spend per episode?
« on: June 09, 2012, 04:50:19 AM »
Have you ever broken down any of your TV seasons, full series, or entire collection and payed attention to how much you spend per episode?

This idea came to me when looking at Justice League: The Complete Series

Amazon sells the entire boxed set series, all 91 episodes, for $71.89 before shipping. That's 79 cents an episode. If you buy the 5 seasons individually, they show as $22.97, $13.88, $29.52, and $7.68 for a total of $74.05 or 81 cents per episode. But you can also buy individual episodes for $1.99 each for a total of $181.09 (though I would expect anyone that takes this route not wanting many of them).

Obviously these are the base near SRP value "extremes" but, as I said, it got me curious about what you guys often pay for episodes.
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

Yes, I actually did. Three years ago I wrote a blog entry about how inexpensive a hobby DVD watching actually is.

I took the last ten series boxes I had bought at that time.

I usually try to stick to the following (UK episodes are generally much closer to the full length, especially BBC because we have no adverts):
£3 for a UK 6 episode series with 30 min episodes.
£5 for a UK 6 episode series with 60 min episodes.
£8 for a US 24 episode series with 22 min episodes.
£12 for a US 24 episode series with 40 min episodes.

I don't always stick to this though if prices haven't gone down several years after release. Some points:
Picked up Alias: Season 1 for £6. Took five years before getting seasons 2-5 but I got the full lot for under £30, less than the SRP of one season.
Picked up Ally McBeal: Season 1 for £1 in a charity shop. Didn't get the later seasons until years later and finished the entire show for about £12.

Funny you posted this thread... This is something I don't normally do... but I was curios on the last complete series set I bought (since I got it so cheap)... Married with Children... 11 seasons...261 episodes.. $39.99... 15¢ per episode

Checking some other complete series sets I have...

I Love Lucy... 62¢ per episode
The Brady Bunch... 77¢ per episode
The Twilight Zone... $1.24 per Epsiode

Because Blair brought it up, I felt inclined to update my survey. Again I took the last 10 purchaes and since today is as random as any day that excludes any particular bias (meaning I had no time to rig the numbers ;)).

Wow.... my "79 cents per episode" that I was considering isn't looking too bad after all!
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.

My last ten (each price is per episode, rounded up in all circumstances):

Home Improvement: Season 6 £0.46
Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Season 1 £0.34
Dead Ringers: Series 1 £0.22
Ideal: Series 1 £0.19
CSI Miami: Season 6.1 £0.50
The Simple Life: Season 4 £0.21
Gavin and Stacey: Series 2 £0.27
21 Jump Street: Season 2 £0.32
The Simple Life: Season 5 £0.53
Family Guy: Season 7 £0.41

Worth pointing out that Home Improvement and Sabrina were new, the rest used (as is 90% of my buying).

My last ten TV sets (price per episode):

American Dad: Volume 5 (€0.71)
Eureka: Season 1 (€0.84)
True Blood: Season 3 Blu-ray (£1.40)
Glee: Season 2 Blu-ray (£1.52)
Family Matters: Season 2 ($1.30 US)
Outsourced: Complete Series ($0.88 US)
Parker Lewis Can't Lose (€0.79)
Glee: Season 1 Blu-ray (£0.77)
South Park: Season 14 ($1.78 CAD)
Battlestar Gallactica: Complete Series (£0.74)

Usually I wait for the prices to drop. As you can see with Glee Season 1. But then I couldn't wait to watch season 2 and paid the full price for it (twice as much!).
