Plot:
With the 12 colonies of man virtually destroyed in the climax of a hundred-year war with the Cylon Empire, President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos) gather up the few humans left and embark on a journey to find the mythical planet Earth, not realizing that the Cylon robot is no longer a recognizable enemy. Now, experience all 13 thrilling episodes of Season 1 and the four hour TV miniseries that started it all in this 5 disc DVD set loaded with explosive bonus features and presented in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

Episodes:
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: MINISERIES
Forty years after the Cylon Wars, humanity's deadliest enemies have reemerged with a vengeance. In a sudden, devastating nuclear attack, the Cylon robots - who have now taken human form - wipe out billions of people. Only a handful of Colonial forces are left to shepherd the few survivors to safety. Commander William Adama, the highest-ranking military officer left alive, reactivates the Battlestar Galactica to once again face humanity's greatest nemeses.

Outnumbered and out armed, Adama reluctantly concedes that the newly sworn-in President Laura Roslin is correct - this battle was lost before it had begun. With no choice but to flee, the ragtag fleet of survivors and humanity's only hope set out in search of the mythic 13th Colony of Kobol... a legendary planet known as Earth.

In a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, a ragtag fleet of humans desperately tries to escape from the Cylon pursuers who are repeatedly attacking them every 33 minutes. When an exhausted Adama discovers that a nearby passenger ship has managed to pass by unscathed, he fears that a traitor on board may be planning the annihilation of the entire fleet.

2. WATER
When a mysterious explosion destroys most of the Galactica's water supply, Adama and President Roslin attempt to control the ensuing riots, while Baltar searches for any Cylons who may have infiltrated the crew.

3. BASTILLE DAY
An icy planet may hold the key to the Galactica's rapidly depleting water source, but when Lee visits a prison transport ship to round up "volunteers" for the mission, he unwittingly sets off a political firestorm.

4. ACT OF CONTRITION
After a flight deck accident kills thirteen of their best pilots, Adama orders Kara to train a new squad, forcing her to confront memories of the death of the commander's son.

5. YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN
When Kara goes missing after encountering a hostile Cylon patrol during a training mission, Adama and Lee exhaust every avenue to bring back their ace pilot.

6. LITMUS
Doral, a Cylon sneaks aboard and blows himself up forcing Commander Adama and President Roslin to make public the terrifying secret that Cylons look like humans. Adama appoints an independent tribunal to investigate the security breach and appoints Sgt. Hadrian head investigator. Hadrian finds that the hatch was left open and focuses the investigation on Chief Tyrol. Tyrol's crew covers for him. Hadrian attempts to further the inquiry but the commander shuts down the tribunal.

7. SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION
Number Six mysteriously appears in human form on the bridge of the Galactica. But when she presents a disc that condemns Baltar for plotting against the human race with the Cylons, Adama must decide whether or not to believe the stunning stranger.

8. FLESH AND BONE
A Cylon named Leobon engages Kara and President Roslin in a deadly battle of wills when he reveals that he's hidden a nuclear device on one of the ships.

9. TIGH ME UP, TIGH ME DOWN
President Roslin suspects that Adama might really be a Cylon when she discovers he's been making secret wireless calls. When he returns to the ship with Tigh's sultry estranged wife, who is seeking reconciliation, personal and political lines are drawn among the remaining crew members.

10. THE HAND OF GOD
When a tylium-rich asteroid inhabited by Cylons is discovered, Kara proposes a risky plan that will leave the Cylons stranded in space if successful, but could also endanger every life on board.

11. COLONIAL DAY
Politics turn ugly at the Interim Quorum of the 12 Colonies when an assassin sneaks on to the site during the vice-presidential election, and President Roslin is forced to turn to an unlikely candidate for her running mate.

12. KOBOL'S LAST GLEAMING, PART 1
A supply team reaches a planet that looks like it could sustain human life, and the crew of the Galactica is hopeful they have reached Kobol, the legendary "home of the gods." Before they can reach the surface though, they must destroy the immense Cylon basestar that guards their last chance for survival.

13. KOBOL'S LAST GLEAMING, PART 2
Civil war simmers amongst the crew of the fleet when Adama learns that Kara disobeyed him on President Roslin's orders. With time running out, an unlikely pilot will deliver a fatal blow to the Cylon basestar and change the fate of everyone about the Galactica forever.

My Thoughts:
I was living in Northampton, England when this series came out on Sky 4 I believe.  One night on the way home from work (somewhere outside of Milton Keynes) there had been a snow.  Now it only snowed about a cm .. just a dusting on the road .. but the m1 was a solid stopped mass of cars.  I had gotten the file of BSG and we sat in the stopped cars watching BSG on my HP 17inch laptop.  Talk about burning a  spot of time into my brain.  I will never forget that.
What does that have to do with this review .. well nothing .. other than I swore that I would get all of the seasons of BSG and re-watch them to see if they really as good as i remembered them being.  I can happily say now that I think they are.
Having just finished the first season, all 13 episodes with the initial mini-series and I am really astounded by just how good they are.
The actors are superb.  The writing is brilliant.  Situations and character development all excellent.
You can tell that these are good when there are characters that you love to hate.  Getting that type of emotion is a sure indicator of excellent writing.

The one thing I find that I don't like in this collection is that the shows were not edited to remove the 'commercial pause' that is part of the show.  I find this a bit distracting.

I would strongly suggest this series to anyone who likes great characters.

We don't do snow in the UK. It's an excuse for a day off work.

Milton Keynes though? Ouch. What a dump, and home of the franchise scum (Milton Keynes Dons), the most hated team in the football league I follow.

<G> You say football ..

I wish i could remember the name of the town I worked out of.  I think it was north of there.  Wait .. it was Bletchley .. one of the many places they worked on the Enigma machines during ww2.

Northampton was nice.

What do you mean by this? the fade-outs and fade-ins before and after the commercial break? You would prefer if they cut them so it changes to a "hard cut"?

I think what Dsig means is that with some shows on DVD, there is no fade in or out, but the episode plays for the full length seemlessly without the feeling there was ever an ad break.

Good morning ...
Exactly.  And the worst bit is that the breaks, of course, are usually during action sequences.  Then a break with a second or so dark and then back to nearly the same scene.

Of course I am not a film editor.  I don't know what can be done to lessen the impact of the breaks .. maybe nothing.  I just reported that I found them them distracting.  More so here than in other shows.

Similar for me. I am stuck in season 2. And have been since February. I would only need to watch three more episodes to finish the second season.
