Was it really that much of a flop? Budget of $250m and has now surpassed that in box office ($256m)... Add the usual 20% of budget for marketing and yes, it has made a reasonable loss but still got life in it yet + TV rights + home cinema etc etc... I bet Disney will still make a profit though maybe not a sequel...

You have to keep in mind that the box office has to be around 200% of the budget for breaking even because it's not just the marketing. The theatres don't show them movies for free...

Obviously true but they take a lot more than 50% on a movie from a major studio... I remember an issue of Hotdog magazine (best movie mag ever... RIP) and they were saying that the studios can take as much as 90% on opening week, dropping down to just 20% on week 6. I'll have a look fthrough the old issues if I can be arsed and look for it. Probably works out on needing the 200% like you say though.

I suppose TV rights could be quite high for this sort of thing? I know it was show this week, that because BBC got outbid on the current season of Mad Men, it went to Sky Atlantic who have paid £250,000 per episode and viewing figures dropped from 400,000 to under 50,000... more than £5 per viewer! Say worldwide, they can probably get £50m+ in TV rights, and being a Disney movie, the rights will continually bring money in forever. I read ITV still pay £10m a year for the Bond films!

+ of course, rentals, streaming, digital purchases, soundtracks, itunes, dvds, Blu's...

I would love to see a full figure for a movie release!

According to Mayo and Kermode the marketing budget on this was exceptionally high, possibly aroun $200M (although other than dropping "...of Mars" it seems unclear what it was spent on ). In the radio show they mentioned Disney is currently preparing for $200M loss on this (theatrically).
