Catching Fire (2013) AKA Hunger Games 2
« on: April 04, 2012, 11:56:35 PM »
Well all the cast are contracted in already but it seems director Gary Ross is being a hard-ass, wanting an increase in pay. Lionsgate are a bit slow on the uptake but want to get filming this year for a Fall 2013 release. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ross didn't do bad out of the first. He got $3m plus 5% of the 'backend'.

I wonder if that means 5% of the box office? If so, that's looking likely to hit $20m payday+ easy!

Ross needs to watch himself. He brought nothing to that film, except a flat story and shaky-cam. Tons of potential, squandered. Decent enough film and I'm glad it's a success, but despite what we were saying the other day, I thought it was actually different enough from Battle Royale to have something fresh to say, but as an adaptation, it was dull with no focus.

Hopefully Ross will talk himself out of a job and someone with a tripod will do the sequel. As a franchise, it deserves to be seen as more than Battle Royale "with cheese" and it could go in some interesting directions.

According to a 'source', Lionsgate have narrowed down the list to 7 or 8 male directors.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2012/04/catching-fire-director-lionsgate-hunger-games-cronenberg-innaritu-cuaron.html

Alfonso Cuarón, David Cronenberg, and Alejandro González Iñárritu are all on the list. Would love to see Cronenberg at the helm of this type of movie.

With Cronenberg it might loose it's mass appeal  Alfonso Cuaron did a great job with his Harry Potter entry, but wasn't it his film that had the most controversy about it (despite being pretty much the best of the series, imo)? It's also not really the right type of film for Iñárritu.

Who are the other four?

Wasn't Cuaron the guy who butchered Prisoner of Azkaban and made a fragmented mess out of the book?

So I remembered right

He did Prisoner. But I think the butchering you refer to happened in the script, not by him ;) Maybe I like it more because it contains my favorite scene of any HP movie:

I think Prisoner is much better transfer to the screen than Goblet of Fire, which was was much more of a butcher job than Prisoner.

For me it was the other way around. Prisoner had too much missing and I hated that episodic telling of the story with the fades to black. When Goblet started the same way I began to fear. But it got better over the course of the movie.

There are three characters who didn't make the transition from book to film:

Like the poster for this one though:
