Topic: Will "The Bodyguard" become a classic or cult movie now ?

The title says it all.  Will the death of Whitney Houston turn an otherwise ordinary movie into something it doesn't deserve ?

Not in my opinion. No movie gets better or worse just because somebody involved dies year later. I think it will remain to be known as a blockbuster starring Costner at his best but that is it.

I'm so tired of all the hype, I doubt I will watch this film again for years.

There might be a slight increase in sales of this movie, but after a few years (months? weeks?) her death will be forgotten and the movie will be just another movie.

Well, to be fair, it was already a very popular film and I'd argue deservedly so. It's a pretty good middle-of-the-road film. Reliably predictable, you know what you're going to get. I doubt her death will find it any new fans; Whitney fans already liked it and it did put her in a good light. And critics are unlikely to re-evaluate it better or worse than they already think.

I wouldn't be surprised if a re-release wasn't on the cards though!

I would expect to coincide with the remake (which was announced before Whitney's death btw).

"We had a used copy of THE BODYGUARD on dvd in our store for a year. A whole year. It was $3.99. Could not sell it. We have a high turnover at Videomatica. Used stuff doesn't sit around long, and new shit is always coming in. A year is a long time.

The day her death was announced my co-worker picked it up, slapped a $9.99 sticker on it, and sure enough an hour later someone called to find out if we had it on dvd, and they reserved it. They were SO HAPPY to find a copy. So happy to find a copy of a movie no one gave a fuck about 24 hours earlier, a movie that we could have sold at least a dozen copies of now that Whitney is dead and the media is telling everyone that they should care about her."

I just saw a documentary about John Hughes yesterday. His film's reputation has improved over the years, originally being labeled as "teen stuff" and now being positively accepted by the critics. But that didn't happen through his death but because the critics started to see more in his films. I think the same is true for others. Either the film has it in itself to become a classic or it doesn't. The death of an actor or director is not going to change that.

Some movies do become more appreciated as time passes, but I don't think it is because one of the actors dies.  That may give the movie a bump in sales for a while, but it won't last.

I did like The Bodyguard when I originally saw it.  I don't remember watching it again that much though.  It isn't that I don't like it or anything..it is just one that I don't want to watch over and over.  I've had the soundtrack for years..got it when the movie was originally out.  The movie may see a spike in sales and rentals, but that will fade.  Just like her CDs jumped up in sales after the news broke, but that will pass too.  The same thing happened when Michael Jackson died.  Some people went a bit nuts buying up all of his CDs for a while.  Her last movie will be out later this year.  Maybe her death will make more people go see it just out of curiosity or something.  I don't think that will make the movie a huge hit though.

I heard about that either yesterday or today on the way to work.  Letting the footage be seen is one thing...but actually selling it.  I don't know..that just seems wrong to me.
