What do I need?
« on: September 02, 2011, 05:25:21 PM »
So my fellow collectors.  What is the one DVD and one BlueRay release I MUST have this year.  Looking for opinions.  I have bought several and am SO looking forward to the BlueRay Star Wars.  But what might I have missed?  What do you think?  Thanks for any and all suggestions.  Also I don't care on the region, foreign, American anything. I love it all.  Thanks again!   :tv:

To answer this question it would be helpful to know a bit more about your collection. Is it viewable online?

Some great stuff I think is missing:

- Body of Lies
- Catch-22
- The Constant Gardener
- Defendor
- The English Patient
- Synecdoche, New York (only if you liked Adaptation!)
- Syriana

You're looking only for new things or do you also want to upgrade some of your DVD's to blu ray ?

New stuff.

The Millenium Trilogy is worth watching.

Today I watched a movie called "127 Hours", it's the true story of a guy who's arm got cut under a boulder and he ended up cutting it off to free himself, an amazing story actually, I know life is strong but I don't think I could do that.

Upgrades
I've already said this many times but you've never really enjoyed Master and Commander untill you've seen it in BluRay

Oh, so you are a DVD Pooler user as well...

For Sience Fiction I'd say one of the reference level Blu-rays is Blade Runner.

Criterion Collection disc are always expertly transferred films.

The Dark Knight is great, as it somewhat recreates the IMAX scenes by showing those section in 1.77:1.

Is there a Criterion DARK KNIGHT out there?  I can't seem to find it.  I already have the BluRay Dark Knight.  Just wondering if I'm missing something?

What led you to think there would be a Criterion release of Dark Knight?  ??? Criterion and a few other labels are specialist independent distributors. They have to licence the films individually and commission the features themselves, hence why they are expensive. They usually concentrate on old films that haven't been restored or released properly by the big distributors, or new films by smaller studios who capitalise on Criterion's unique presentations (Wes Anderson's films). In the past they have released a handful of well known big modern films, like Robocop, Silence Of The Lambs, The Rock and Armageddon, but these are rare and I doubt you'll see any more. They saw a niche market for these popular films to be released with better presentations than the original studios who licensed them to do it, but nowadays those studios are more savvy and get on with releasing ultimate editions immediately. Not to mention in this digital age, new films don't need Criterion's attention to restoration.

I wouldn't put it past them to catch on to an undervalued brand new film and release an awesome edition of it, but credit where it's due, the Dark Knight Blu-Ray is pretty good already.

Criterion use a spine number system and the website is thorough so if it isn't in the list, they haven't done it.

It was brought up and mentioned in an earlier post ...  I thought I might have missed something.  I have a few Criterion Collection Items and have always been impressed and YES DARK KNIGHT BLU-RAY IS AWESOME AS IS.  I love the IMAX Print sections.  Just beautiful.  Just trying to expand my horizons.
