You're sticking with mainstream Johnny Depp there though. It's well worth considering his very subtle performance in Finding Neverland. And even duds like Secret Window and The Ninth... Gate? Christ, that film was so awful I can't even be bothered to double-check the title! But seriously, he was excellent in both, it's just the stories were terrible.

I caught De Niro in The King of Comedy the other night. Never bothered with it before, but it was on TV. His performance is stunning. In some ways it's a strange choice for both him and Scorcese, as it shares themes with Taxi Driver and has been lost in the shadow a little bit, but I highly recommend it as a rather disturbing and unusual film. It's more obvious and pointed in its satire than Taxi Driver, but centres on De Niro's performance.

I can't forgive him the Fockers when he proved how good at comedy he could be with Midnight Run.

Talking about great appearances of Depp in otherwise awful movies: Don Juan De Marco where he easily outplays Marlon Brando.

I can't forgive him [Robert De Niro (annotation by quoter)] the Fockers when he proved how good at comedy he could be with Midnight Run.

Not to forget his awesome (and really funny) short appearance in Stardust
The "Fockers-Trilogy" should be banned from all players for being torture. I still wonder what they did to unite this cast for the sequel ... it for sure wasn't the quality of the script.

I understand what you mean maybe De Niro should have never have took this role cause we all know he's a action guy. I have never actually seen Heat that's why i never mentioned it all have to check it out.

It keeps slipping from my mind, but yes, The King of Comedy is a great little film. very dark humor, just how I like it.

but the combination of De Niro and Pacino doesn't necessarily indicate a good movie.
While Heat is one of the best movies ever, Righteous Kill is simply awful.

This is going to seem like a bizarre nomination, but I'm throwing the name of Bill Murray into the ring.

I'm not a fan of Pacino, I find that the only difference between his performances is the title of the film he's in.
To me there is no difference between his performance in Scent of a Woman and The Devils Advocate and Any Given Sunday(I really like this film though).
Would his regard/esteem as an actor be as high it if wasn't for Scarface?
I find the same with several other actors that are regarded as being greats - DeNiro, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, Samuel L. Jackson and probably the biggest offender of them all in Sean Connery. They just seem to have become parodies of themselves now.

I would rate Liam Neeson, Denzel Washington, John Malkovich, Tommy Lee Jones(borderline and is very quickly heading towards parody territory), Robert Duvall, Nic Cage and possibly George Clooney.

No one's ever going to be happy with a final choice...people have different opinions about different actors.  And no one actor is going to be a good choice in every kind of movie.  Humphrey Bogart is considered one of the finest actors of his generation but somehow I don't see him as a viable choice for a Shakespearean film.  And if Richard Burton and John Wayne (in their prime) were available and you're doing a western, which one would you hire?

I know, almost want to mention that too. Maybe it's because in Het they only share the screen in one scene...? I have not seen Righteous Kill and don't intend to change that.

I know funny enough i was flicking through the channels last night and Heat is on tonight on Film 4 so all be watching it tonight. starts at 9 tonight and doesn't finish till about 15 Min's past 12 and I'm up early tommorrow but stuff it should be worth staying up for.

I don't dispute that he has done some brilliant work, but to my mind he has done many more films where wasn't anything special.

I think that his performance as Hannibal Lecktor is laughable and is as menacing as a Pantomime Dame. Brian Cox was far superior and way more chilling.

Just a Question do you think if James Dean was still alive today or had died at a decent age like at least 60+ he would have been one of the names people refer to when there talking about the Greatest Actor of all time.

I thought he was great in his 3 Movies he made East of Eden,Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant do you think James would have continued to star in great movies and play his roles great or do you think he would have faded away in the 60's and 70's and only been remembered for his most famous role in Rebel Without a Cause as Jim Stark.

Basically do you think he would have fullfilled the great acting career many people tipped him to have in Hollywood and do you think he would be as big today as he is if he lived or do you think if he didn't die a premature death he wouldn't be as big.

James Dean was charismatic but IMO no actor. He merely "played" himself. So, Yes, he would have faded into nothingness very soon after getting too old for the "young misunderstood rebel".
