Give the miniseries Jekyll a go. Written by Moffat, it's a new take on the Jekyll & Hyde scenario set in modern times. It's really quite well done.

Just arrived today and after two episodes: This show is awesome! :yahoo: Thanks again for recommending it.

Ah, now you've reminded me. James Nesbit possibly came to be better known through the drama years ago called Cold Feet.

And while some might find it's a little bit streamlined for mainstream, I found his and the rest of the cast stunning in Occupation.

That leads me to Stephen Graham, who you may know as Tommy from Snatch or Baby Face Nelson from Public Enemies. He has done some incredible work and I think his characters arc in This Is England '86, the TV follow up to Shane Meadows' film was fantastic. Such an obvious plot given a heck of a jolt.

I know we're concentrating on TV here, Matthias, but what with the BBC and Channel 4 investing so strongly in film, the line often blurs. Have you considered Shane Meadows films? There's a nice Collection available. Oh and a review of his first with more on the way is available here...

I can't believe I forgot the most underrated UK comedy of all time.

Early Doors (two series, 6 episodes each, wraps up beautifully)

Buy it. Watch it. Thank Me.

Anyone been watching Friday Night Dinner? New family based sitcom, very good.  They're online, though I don't know if they're restricted...

The sods!

That was an episode hosted by the 4OD service. This is an extended trailer which might work, but it's still official so possibly not...

Maybe I should have done a search before asking questions about Being Human since we already have two threads for the show.  :bag:

http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,5232.0.html

Anyway, I got hold of the original pilot and the first episode via questionable means. I liked the pilot quite a bit, but the first episode not so much. I can see why the pilot isn't included on the DVDs, because the cast changes didn't work for me at all. Along with the prettier "actor" faces, the show got a slightly more slicker look and lost what little personality it had in the first place, both visually and story-wise. I think I will pass on this.

It's a shame that you didn't take to the rejiggled cast of Being Human, as TBH I've found that I prefer BH to Tru Blood (the angst and romance is getting on my tits).

I know you said that you're not a fan of sitcoms, but I echo others with their recommendations of Blackadder(especially Goes Fourth) and Red Dwarf(up until about season 7)

The Prisoner, not the recent God awful remake starring Jim Caviezel, the original 60's show starring Patrick McGoohan.
Tipping The Velvet
Dead Set
Drop The Dead Donkey, a comedy set in a tv newsroom, may be a little dated no but at the time it was very topical as the scripts were finished the day of filming and then it was broadcast a day or two later.
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet .

Bedlam
Neverwhere
Callan
Bernard & the Genie (a very good Christmas special if you can get a hold of it)

Thanks. The original The Prisoner I have seen of course. Neverwhere might be interesting; I have to take a closer look.

BBC America has been showing The Inbetweeners and Come Fly With Me the last few weeks on Saturday night.  I've been watching them both and liking them.

Any recommendations based on the these?

I definitely have to recommend the following miniseries:
Gormenghast
Pride and Prejudice
The Quatermass Experiment / Quatermass II / Quatermass and the Pit (the last being downright creepy)
The Day of the Triffids (1980s).

I've not seen A For Andromeda / The Andromeda Breakthrough, but those along with the Quatermass serials are credited with paving the way for sci-fi on mainstream UK TV (in particular, Doctor Who).

Hey!  :redcard:

I've got the Quatermass Collection a couple of years ago and have seen all three. Agree on the last one, but also never had the urge to revisit them. The Triffids I'm aware of, but never really heard any good things about it. And for some reason I always had the misconception that the Andromeda series is somehow related to the movie The Andromeda Strain. I know better now.

Speaking of old UK sci-fi, I've occasionally and half-heartedly toyed with the idea of giving Blake's 7 a try, but in the end I doubt that I would enjoy it.

I think I said it earlier this thread but any fans of UK comedy needs Early Doors. One of the best comedies ever and you can get both series seperately from Amazon for £6.48 (or together for £6.99 ???)

Just ordered Red Dwarf: The Complete Collection

Blame goes to Tom!

Craig Charles has left Coronation Street temporarily to film new episodes of Red Dwarf.
