Well as is typical for me .. I am about to restart my Skyrim game!

Why? Because I had spec'd my guy to be a heavy armor sword and shield warrior .. but after playing a bit more, I found I have more fun sneaking around, shooting my bow from afar, then switching to sword for the final blow.

So, my plan now is to make a sneaking archer, who can handle himself in a sword fight. Hope that works in the long run ;)

Or more importantly .. how the hell am I gonna kill a dragon with my puny Steel Sword?? ;)
I listened to a podcast today where they pointed out that level 10 or below you better not even attempt...

One of the guys said he was attacked by a dragon (the music shall clue you in, hopefully you won't feel spoiled by this) at level 4. He ran away and when he me a group of soldiers he thought "cool, they can help". The soldiers got massacred so he kept running. Eventually he met a group of giants Ho were able to kill the dragon...

Jon, I have no intention to get this myself. There is too many games on my shelf already, so I'd rather not add another one that could keep me occupied fr 100+ hours

I can confirm that Giants are not to be messed with! I still haven't met with a dragon, but I saw first hand a giant hitting a peasant. Let's just say .. RUN!! (especially since I was at Lvl3 at the moment... I did get the killing blow in though, hiding behind my little rock, with my bow ;)

The game really is amazing. There are many random really fun events, that seem unscripted. Honestly? I think it'll become one of the better 100 hours I will have invested in a game. I'm not nearly far enough into it to have encountered any special random event. The highlight of my game, so far, as far as random events go, is that I was hunting Elks for their hides, and I got jumped by a pack of wolves! Almost killed me too! .. fun times ;)

Yeah, but they only got into the forum accounts, which I haven't registered for. I'm changing my password anyway.

Also, make sure Steam Guard is enabled. I believe it ties your account to registered computers.

They went beyond the forum Jon, they got to the database.

http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_announce

Quote
Yesterday, on November 10, 2011, the following message was sent to all users via a Steam message.

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

Sorry, yes, but what I meant was that I would have been far more concerned had they compromised the main accounts because that would be a mess. I'm quite pragmatic about this sort of thing. Yes, there is a small chance my CC number has been snatched, but that's precisely why I only use that one card for online purchases. It wouldn't cause any real issue to have to cancel it.

I'm always a little concerned with these things because I'm negligent with passwords, I use the same everywhere (except for online banking) and I don't change it often..................................

Was that stupid to write this on a public forum  :hmmmm:

Only if you don't change it!  :-[ Steam is what I would regard as particularly sensitive, so my password method matches...

I changed my Steam password as soon as I heard about the hack, but I can't remember if I had registered for the forums or not. Oh well, i'll monitor my cards and hope for the best.

On a side note, just had 3 dragon encounters in Skyrim!

First encounter was part of the story, so nothing too difficult, as there were hordes of other fighters alongside me.

Second encounter was a bit more challenging but .. a freaking Giant came to my help! (or, more accurately, the Dragon threw itself at a Giant .. BIG mistake by the Dragon)

then a sabre cat killed me (and I hadn't saved after killing that previous Dragon ... so I had to fight it again)

Third encounter .. I thought I'd never get through it! But now that I think of it, I probably should've used my nice little "Fire Resist" potions a bit more .. ;)

When I saw the news it didn't quite occur to me, but just now I realize: I have a Steam account! :slaphead: The good part: while my credit card data is stored there, it's the card that I already cancelled due to the Sony incident six months ago  I'll go and change my password now.

The game really is amazing. There are many random really fun events, that seem unscripted. Honestly? I think it'll become one of the better 100 hours I will have invested in a game. :redcard:

Must. Resist.

I will buy Saints Row: The Third tomorrow, which should give me an equal amount of sand boxing with loads of crazy stuff to do. The bad news, since I'll be in the game store I will have to fight to resist...

EDIT:
Finding this shortly after makes resisting so much easier:
Skyrim Continues Heritage of Glitches and Bugs
It's Bethesda, so no real surprise there...

EDIT 2:
...and now I found this:

Not so sure after all... :hmmmm: (go to the 6min mark of the video to see some of those funny glitches...)

Must. Resist.
:bag:

Couldn't. Resist.

Sorry, Jon, but I am really glad I didn't, this game is awesome. I thought that the medieval setting would put me off, that the lack of guns and limitations to melee weapons and bow and arrows would not be satisfying to me. But all that did not apply so far. In fact, it all feels really great thus far.

Weird is, that I played for three hours so far and not really much happened. Well, I went to this town and one guy said there was this thing that was taken from him and asked if I cold get it back. Sure, I thought, a quick fetch quest should be fine. Boy was I wrong. I had to crawl through an entire dungeon to find the thing, and then find out what it's for. Ended up getting a new spell as a reward. And just as the last uber-guardian was about to kick my a$$ again I thought..."spells"...? Let's try that! And that was the most fun I had in the three hours, blasting away with my first spell  (something I never quite accustomed to in Bioshock).

Another guy just before that last one also gave me a hard time. Just when I thought I wasn't high enough level for him I tried a new approach. I sneaked close, then ran past him up on some rocks where he couldn't reach. Once he realized that, he simply walked away :hysterical:

Sebastien, I am very thankful that you gave the detail description. That and the review by IGN's Charles Onyett helped sway my decision. Can't wait to play more.

BTW, I am playing as a lizard guy. I will teach him more sneaking, more bow and arrow stuff and more spells. I like it how th eleveling up comes through use, not by choice, makes for a more realistic approach. use your item, get better with it. Not like Fallout where you could dump loads ofpoints on an item and could be super good with it, even you never used it before.

Skyrim, despite the glitches, the game is awesome!

I'm still only Level 12, but, I've been having so much fun! Just cleared a dungeon for a fetch quest, where I got my ass handed to me on my first try. Then I realized I am built as a sneaky archer, I can't just run in there arrows flying, I need to use some form of strategy. So I just kept applying poison to my Bow and firing away. That poison really does stack up and made quick work of my foes. Found a really nice spell tome in a chest on that quest too!

But the highlight, for me, are the Thu'ums, or Shouts if you prefer. They are awesome! Especially for an Archer who is in a bind against a big melee guy.

Need a nice strategy against Giants? Just run inside any structure and shoot it through the door ;)

Glad you're enjoying it Achim, it's really a great game. So much to do, and the world in ginormous! I haven't gone to any other city that Riverwood and Whiterun, and yet I have no shortage of stuff to do, between hunting for leather, mining for ingots, smithing new armor and weapons, exploring dungeons, doing side quests .. and that's not counting those little unscripted random encounter!

There's also many little touches that make the game all the better. Like walking up to an enemy and actually see where your arrows hit! How the screen simulates glare from looking at the sun and then looking at something dark, it'll take a few seconds for your "eyes" to adapt. Kids walking up to you saying "Wanna play a game?" and then you can play hide and seek or Tag! with them.

I love that game!

Oh, and as far as glitches go, personally, the worst I've had was being stuck in 3rd person view, for which I had to reload a previous save, which made me lose a big 2 minutes of play. But I think I know how it happened, so I'll just not do it again (it would be a spoiler to say what happened .. sorry .. all I'll say is that if during gameplay the game locks you into 3rd person view, don't try to go back to 1st until the "event" is over).

A funny one occurred too: a bandit decided that it would be fun to run headfirst into a pillar and got stuck there. Just had to fire an arrow and he was gone. Thing is, I couldn't loot him, because he fell down through the pillar!  :hysterical:

There's also situation where I was right in front of an enemy and he couldn't see me. I was right there, lit up like a christmas tree by the nearby fire, and yet the guy didn't react at all. Even got the sneak bonus when I shot him right in the mouth!

Now there is something I didn't think of yet. I know I have some poison already, I shall try to combine it with the arrows.

Not only do the arrows stick with the enemy, you can also retrieve them back! I was wondering why one enemy "offered" arrows as loot, even he had fought with a sword, but then I realized that I had used my bow...

I already started learning crafts from Alvor, but I was not aware I can also mine my own materials...

I once ended up in 3rd person view accidentally and didn't know yet how to switch back. Awkward moments... It's mapped to clicking the left stick on the PS3, need to change that as in hectic moments that gets always triggered somehow.

I am only level 5 so far, so still no shouts here. I think they are basically enabled already, but I need my first dragon soul...

Just remember that poison applied to any weapon lasts for exactly 1 attack. If melee, it lasts until the first attack that connects with an enemy. For ranged, it is applied to the bow, but lasts until you fire the next arrow, hit or miss. You can't poison your fists, or your staff.

That's why alchemy is so useful to an archer ;)

Yeah, you need to find a pickaxe and then when traveling you should see here and there a symbol on your compass that will make you think of a mine. Well, chances are, it will be a mine! I also found that there are some veins on the ground even in plains, but mostly you'll find them in mountains or mines. I find they are really hard to spot though .. maybe I haven't found enough to actually identify them easily.

You need 2 things: a dragon soul, but you also need to learn the word for it. You'll know when you come across it, if you haven't already. ;)
