When my father was still alive, I would never let him near any of my books. He had a subconscious habit of tearing off a page corner and using it like a toothpick while he was reading. Even after point it out, he still did it. Resigned myself to just replace any books he read and gave him the ones he read. He never say any of my first editions, needless to say.
