Sometimes spammers are clueless
« on: November 01, 2010, 02:36:35 AM »
Check the subject of one I received today ::)

It's a change from the numerous ones I get from the ONU, the Nobel Price Committee, an Australian lotery I win each week, some bank I never heard of who will delete my account, some guys who want me as a bussiness partner or some African guy who wants to give 345,775,000$ if I help him

I replied to one of those once. I told that if I'm to get 35,000,000 out of it all, just take the 2,000 he needs for the transfer from the 35,000,000 and to just send me 34,998,000 and that I'd be happy.

Funny, I never got another email of that kind again.

He did reply, thanking me for letting him know that the scam was too obvious  ???

The sad thing is that there are still many people who believe such lies. There's always someone who wants to get rich quick, are not Internet savvy, or are too trusting.

I've heard of people going completely broke because they keep digging themselves into a bigger hole first believing and then later hoping it's real otherwise they are in serious financial trouble.
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

It's even funnier when it's from an american or european bank. Why would I own a bank account in the US or the UK

My money isn't even in a bank, but in a cooperative like most of the French Canadian

On the other hand, I'm inspired to change the language settings on my email! "Junk Mail" is so coarse compared with "Courrier Indesirable".

We have a word for the junk mail in french canadian that is "pourriel", but I find it really ugly and, according to me, a word that had nothing to do in our language. But most of the internet terms name in french canadian are pretty idiotics (I'm sure Sebastien will agree with me on that).

That would be the equivalent of "puerile", but we use that in English to mean childish and immature. I suppose it also refers to things that are pointless, while being childish, so I can the link to junk mail.

No it's the conjonction of two words : courriel (who is our word for email) and pourri (rotten in english).
The word make sense in theory, but I don't like it. "courrier indésirable" was fine, no need of a new word for this...

Definitely. And why I always use programs in english. Most of the time, the words used don't even make sense.

Just today, I made a powerpoint presentation a while back and used the "Slide Master" feature to have consistent backgrounds between slides (namely, have the company logo at the exact same spot on every slide, because before I did that, it was jumping all over the place).

Well today, a colleague wanted to take that presentation and modify for another of our divisions. So I sent it to him. His Powerpoint is in french.

We recently moved to Powerpoint 2010. So I had to find that functionality again.

In english, it's in VIEW -> MASTER VIEWS -> SLIDE MASTER.

In french, it's in AFFICHAGE -> MASQUE AFFICHAGE -> MASQUE DIAPOSITIVE...  ???

So not what I was looking for... Took me 5 minutes to find it in french.. 5 seconds in english.
