For the 29/11

Battle Royale - Special Edition [DVD]
Battle Royale - Special Edition [Blu-ray]

Battle Royale is back. It’s time to return to the island and kill your friends, because the cult Japanese movie that defines twisted action and sickening violence is ready to shock you all over again.

In a world where teenagers have no respect and adults are losing control there can be only one solution: Battle Royale! Now, see what happens when you let a high school class loose on an island, arm them and then give them a simple choice... Kill your friends or have them kill you; with poison, cross-bows, machetes and dynamite. ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano (Violent Cop, Zatoichi) is a teacher pushed to the edge by his unruly charges. Kidnapped and gassed, his class wake up with exploding metal rings around their necks. If they rebel, they could lose their heads. Now they have three days and only one is permitted to survive this grisly battle to the death.

Directed by the master of 70s Yakuza thrillers Kinji Fukasaku and featuring Kill Bill star Chiaki Kuriyama, Battle Royale is the movie that helped to define extreme Asian cinema in the 21st Century.

I really want the Limited Edition, too. I have to wait though to see whether it will be region free or not. (Seeing how Toho doesn't want this to be shown in the US so far, they might insist on Region B only encoding).

I'm almost sure I've read somewhere it isn't region locked, but to be sure you can always send an email to Arrow Films.

info@arrowfilms.co.uk

My current british dvd is region free, so I don't think the not showing in the USA is really a big deal.

This will be my first Blu-ray double-dip. The DVD release I own has a really bad video transfer, and since I tried to watch it on my (at the time new) HDTV, I have had this movie on my "needs to be replaced" list. Although I do not have the director's cut yet. So it isn't really breaking my resolution to not buy movies on Blu-ray which I already own on DVD  :P

Ooh, thank you, Jimmy! I lent my rare Special Edition to a friend almost two years ago. That's the last time I saw the friend and the DVD. ::) To be fair, he was made redundant that same week, so it wasn't on the forefront of his mind.

Actually, why am I excited to see this film? I just realised it was also responsible for the beginning of the end for a long friendship with a cousin of mine. He's asked to borrow it, which I regularly did with him. He asked if I minded him copying it, so he could watch it at leisure. I said yes, because it saved me lending it out, but absolutely categorically definitely no bloody way was he to copy it for anyone else. He had a tendency to swap with other thieving lazy pirates friends of his.

One week later, I'm round his house and there is handing out a copy to a mate of his in exchange for more copied stuff. I cannot tell you how angry I was! >:(

When I get this version, no bugger is ever borrowing it! Ever.

That's why my default answer on lending requests is: "You know what I did to get this DVD? ... I bought it!"
Lost two DVDs and got one back as a coaster, never ever will I lend a DVD again.

I don't have a reply to my mail, but apparently blu-ray.com received confirmation. Apperently the release will be region free :yahoo:

Since it's a Limited Edition, I am going to place my pre-order now, just in case...

And since it's an all region dvd and br released limited to 5000 copies of a well known movie (or at least with a good following) it's the better thing to do. It isn't the genre of release I expect to see available very long, maybe not even at the end of the year...

Not that my actual dvd isn't good enough, but a limited edition is a limited edition

Anyway if I can double dip on Plan 9 from outer space and triple dip on Don't answer the phone I don't see how I couldn't on this one

-------------------------------

edit : it's already at the #15 spot in the BR sales at Amazon.uk and it was announced only this week, so it gives you an idea of how fast this one will disapear...

Mine is £11.91 but it is the dvd version, but the price haven't change for the dvd set. My price is lower because the taxes are included in the price (£13.99) I think and since I ain't British I don't have to pay it. :hmmmm:

It looks great!

I am also glad I placed my pre-order when I did (:hmmmm: my price also seems to have the tax deducted, never noticed that before). Price for Blu-ray has gone up by £2!
