Region 1 DVD Packaging...
« on: October 09, 2010, 01:21:45 PM »
How do you US peeps put up with the way your DVDs are packaged? It's like trying to get into a fortress! I had one delivered last week, it was shrink wrapped, with a security sticker on the top, bottom and side, and even then, the case itself had a little lock tab on it. Good grief. And those security stickers! If you don't tear them off just right they leave goo behind. What are they doing? Trying to make me really appreciate my purchase?

Plus, why do so many have wrinkly covers, where the plastic isn't smooth and the label underneath gets creased? I find that particularly fascinating.

Overall, Region 2 are much higher quality and usually sealed in cellophane, often with a nice pull tag to help take it off. It takes mere seconds. I've never seen the weird "plastic needs ironing" look here either.

I thought we'd talked about it before, but it's always worth mentioning again! Why do they put up with it? Start a campaign!

Because we North Americans are a bunch of thieves
Seriously it's really the justification, but the packaging is way over the top... But, the last 2 I got from Shout! Factory this week were packaged just like a region 2 dvd with only a cellophane and no stickers anywhere ;D

Maybe it's because they understand that it makes no sense for the online purchases or maybe it's because of the recession again

I got a couple recently without the stickers as well. I also gotten a couple recently with only the top sticker (with title on it) on it.

I mostly get the ones with those on the top...but I still occasionally get one with stickers on the side and on the bottom as well.  I hate those...they're often hard as hell to get off, too.  Surprisingly enough, of the recent handful of animated super-hero titles I got, one of them (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) didn't have any of those stickers on them.  Maybe this is a new trend?

I haven't got one with stickers on all side for a while now. Mind you I don't buy as many as I used to either.

I've hated all those sticker things for years.  It is so annoying.  And if the cover isn't under the plastic holder thing right, when you take off the sticker, it pulls part of the cover with it.  That really ticks me off.

I don't think the ones I've gotten recently have had as many of the stickers.  I think a few of the Blu-rays I've gotten recently haven't had any..just the shrink wrap.  The new Beauty and the Beast had one at the top.  I honestly can't remember if Karate Kid had any..I think Iron Man 2 had one at the top.

I haven't gotten as many DVDs since I got my Blu-ray player, though I don't think most of them have been as surrounded in stickers.  The 50 movie horror set I got did have one across the top.

I hope they stop those annoying stickers all together.  It is so frustrating.

Our security system is that there is often a plastic tab inside the case with a magnetic strip that has to be demagnetised before you can leave the shop. I can't see what good your stickers do.

But why the wrinkly covers as well, or do the cases simply warp during the flight over the Atlantic?  ;)

Never remarked this and I buy from everywhere. I doubt it's because of the travel, since my british dvd show up here perfectly fine. Maybe you have bought something old or from a non-name label or a repackage used dvd

I can't see what good your stickers do.

A lot of shoplifters here are stymied by those three strips. Most shoplifters just steal the disc, not the case, so they would bring a box cutter in with them and slice the shrink wrap and take the disc.

As you and others have found, those pesky little stickers have to be sliced just right to open the case, therefore making it take longer to get the disc. Time is not a shoplifters friend, as every second they take opening the case, is another second of possible detection by security cameras or store personnel.

I've noticed that wrinklings quite a few times in the past, too. It's like someone put something hot on it afterwards.

See the small horizontal reflections on Fiona? These wrinkles are on the left and on the right of the cover from top to bottom.

Actually, Dark Night of the Scarecrow has arrived today and the back cover is like that. Weird.

This is what I said Jon, VCI is a cheap dvd label (in the sense of using poor material to save money) mostly specialized on PD stuff. I'm sure the packaging will be the same for me when my copy will show up at my door next week.
