I actually find Goodfellas a bit indulgent. Don't misunderstand, I love it, but while we're splitting hairs :laugh:, in comparison to the first two Godfathers or purely as a film, Taxi Driver, I find it less incisive.

But then again, that's been Scorsese's modus operandi throughout his career.

Wouldn't have necessarily been a failure. Just check his performance in "Knockaround Guys".

Neither of them look a thing like the guy who inspired the Conway character, so whose to know? Malkovitch could have been awesome. He can deliver charming menace, with just a hint of madness. I think he could have even been better than De Niro when Conway gets paranoid.

True, though I found it less so in Taxi Driver. Shutter Island is refreshing for being so old fashioned actually.
