The Princess Diaries
Disney's hilarious smash hit gets the royal treatment in this extraordinary special edition — only on DVD. Starring Academy Award® winner* Julie Andrews, the enchanting Anne Hathaway and Hector Elizondo (
Pretty Woman
),
The Princess Diaries
is a cool, comical Cinderella story that will touch your heart. For teenager Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), just surviving each school day is an adventure. Then the shocking news arrives that she's a real-life princess! So begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness, including a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country.
*Best Actress, 1964,
Mary Poppins

My Thoughts
I first saw this one after it first was available to rent. I eventually picked up the DVD a few years later when a new special edition version came out. I enjoyed the movie when I first saw it and I still enjoy it. I still haven't read the book it was based on, so I don't know what has been changed.
The plot isn't the most original overall, though there are original elements. I'm not bothered by that because the movie is fun and entertaining overall. It is just a fun, mostly lighthearted movie. It is a good family friendly movie, though it will probably appeal to girls more than boys. A few things that come up are more serious, but I do think it is fun overall. There isn't anything objectionable in the movie, so parents don't have to worry with this one.
There is a decent amount of humor to the movie and that does help to make it more fun and entertaining. A lot of the humor comes from the fact that Mia is rather clumsy. Some of the humor is a bit silly, but that works for the movie. The humor may not appeal to everyone. There is a tiny bit of romance in the movie tied to Mia and a boy she is interested in. That is all very mild and not much is actually shared.
The characters are interesting and entertaining and the cast is wonderful. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews work wonderfully well together. Andrews is very believable as a Queen.
The DVD version I have has 2 discs, one with the widescreen version and one with the full screen version. There are several extras, though really all I've checked out is the bloopers.
This is a fun, entertaining movie that is a good choice for families and worth checking out.
I did get a review posted on Epinions a few years ago.
