So this is it, these people have so much respect for me and my competence that one won't invite me over to fix her problems and the other trusts me so much that if he doesn't like my answer he goes and ask someone else ?  Guess what kind of answer people get when they come to me with their problems now.

Well, I guess I'm lucky because I've never had that problem. Everybody I've helped so far have gladly paid for services - or invited me over for dinner. Most of the time, we ended up ordering pizza but hey! a meal's a meal! ;)

I have 1 colleague though that will come to me, ask my opinion, then go out and ask for a second opinion. Every single time. It's his prerogative of course, but when every time, so far, the other guy's answer is the same as mine, makes you wonder why he keeps bothering

Then, there are those who call you up first thing saturday morning and expect to have they computer fixed by noon. Of course, that guy pays whatever I decide to charge (one time I got so angry with him it ended up costing him 200$ for setting up a monitor :-[), but still...

When it comes to my family, no, because my brother-in-law repairs computers. But for friends and neighbors, I'm usually the one who gets a call, even though I would be deemed computer illiterate by the general computer community.

Now, Home Theater is a different question altogether. Since I was an early teen I've been into Hi-Fidelity, so when someone is thinking about audio or video electronics, they definitely call me for advice, or to wire their system.

Since you used the word "Hi-Fidelity", I had no choice to think of you as Don Cheadle in Boogie Nights, now.  ;D

I had so many problem with my last computer it would classify as a lemon. Once the warranty was done, it broke once again. One of my friends was able to fix it for me but refused to let me pay him for the parts or the labor.

I would never have someone do something for me without giving something in return, so I ordered a dozen filet mignon and dinner fixings from Omaha Steaks and sent it to him. I think his wife might have been the most happy, she didn't have to cook six meals!

The jerk left my office saying "I don't like your answer, I regret asking you, I'm gonna ask John".

I only help my mom.
My friend had these great stories about his mom and her computer. One of the best was:
He had set up her new computer, all was working well. We went back to the city where he works. A few days later (maybe a week or two) she called him saying that the computer was full. He was confused, as it was a new computer with a sufficiently large hard drive. Anyway, when he got back hoime next time she showed him the problem: She had been saving all her documents do the desktop, which was now filled with no more room for new icons.

I probably would be the go-to-guy for some people back home (my father often waits patiently for months with some of his problems though ???), but since I am in Taiwan I only get to to be the company IT guy (by function, not by knowledge) and for my partner.

I love people like you. At work I sometimes fix the users' personal laptops (it's a political thing. Technically I don't have to, but it's encouraged). One lady kept asking me what I wanted and after a bunch of back and forth I finally said, "Your like the mom of mom's right?"

"Yes!"

"So next time you bake cookies, make me some. I will work for cookies."

Two days later I found a big tupperware container of cookies with a $50 gift card from amazon on my desk.

Another user, after fixing his computer, asked me if I liked coffee. I said, "Dude, I work in IT. It's our lifeline."

The next day he gave me a $50 gift card to starbucks.

I love people like that. I didn't ask for anything and they gave me much more than I anticipated. I assure you, that generosity was appreciated.

Lmao!!
My dad definitely gets taken advantage of by our whole family for fixing PCs, laptops, gaming consoles, TVs etc. He can take a broken computer apart and fix it again within a day, but he can never remember where he puts his glasses :P

A few times I've helped friends and family set up or clean aquariums, but I would never do that for free...waaaay too much work involved.
