Here's one for Jon
« on: July 15, 2010, 12:22:08 AM »
Did you hear about this Jon?

Viggo Mortensen was originally cast to play John Dunbar. Mortensen will, however, be playing John Dunbar in the upcoming sequel to this movie, The Holy Road (2011), as Kevin Costner has stated that he will not be reprising his character.

Damn, I should have used that as a question in the game. I would have thought that everyone knew who John Dunbar was in film.  :hmmmm:

The Holy Road has been circling for some time, but I had no idea of Viggo's involvement, nor did I know he was originally lined up.

If you'd have used that as a question, I'd have been stuffed and...  :suicide:

It all still seems tentative. I can't possibly imagine how they can follow it, as a film, but if they do, Mortensen is a great choice. Costner is a good actor, but not a great actor, but somehow it just worked so perfectly for Dunbar. Viggo is enough of a blank slate to adapt it well I think.

I've only seen that one once years ago...like shortly after it was available to rent.

I know it's your favorite film of all time Jon, but I have to ask you this...

Didn't it bother you slightly that in the beginning, Dunbar looks perfectly depicted, clothing and appearance wise. While, towards the end of the film, it looks like somebody was blow drying his hair.

This is what has always kept me from giving it a perfect rating.

Now I don't feel so bad.  And honestly, I've forgotten just about everything about the movie.

Honestly never gave it a thought. But then, I'm never that picky anyway! ;) Ok, you've mentioned my enthusiasm for five-stars before, but honestly, I can't mark a film down for a misplaced mullet! When I say I think a film deserves full marks, I'm not saying it's perfect; I'm saying it's bloody awesome for enough reasons that in such an optimistic art-form, it deserves to be recognised as a milestone.

On the other hand I wouldn't attempt to review Dances With Wolves anyway. I can probably think of several things wrong, but they don't come across negatively. It's hard to explain just how strong a connection I have with it.

Whereas normally, the more I like a film, the more I want to discuss, dissect it and theorise why, maybe even finding a couple of negative points, as I did just recently with The Constant Gardener, I'm the opposite with this. It made such a fundamental impact on me, I wouldn't know where to start. Actually I'm quite proud that I found a film that does have such resonance as most people 'pick' a favourite. I didn't have a choice! ;)
