The inevitable has happened :(
« on: June 15, 2010, 06:15:06 PM »
My DVD collection has out grown my room which means I need to dramaticlly reorganise the room or I will not be able to move, unfortunatlley this means another one of my collections will have to take a hit.

Now, I can't really imagine my CD's being anywhere but around my CD player and my books are now mostly in my wardrobe... so it looks like my retro games consoles are taking the hit  :( To say I am upset is beyond what I feel. I have had some pieces of my Game collection for well over 15 years and now I am going to have to move them to another place just to put my DVDs away safely... Idealy I would like to redecorate the room and add more shelves but that is not an option currently as we are hoping to re-wire the house soon which would make any for of decorating pointless.... maybe I could convince someone to make me some shelves that will just have to be taken down. who knows. But until then my games are going to have to go under my bed under my desk.

Maybe I should sell some DVDs ( :tomato:) but I cant even pick what to sell... even the ones i dislike I want to keep. :/ I really can't get any more until I have more space

maybe its a good thing i will watch what I have. but I will miss out on some bargains in the mean time :(

...Rant over. haha.

I know that all too well.

There's just no room for more shelves in my DVD room, so some had to spill over to another room in the house. I settled on kids and family friendly films that I now put in the living room for my nieces to pick from when they want to watch something.

I feel so bad about it. It's like there's a hole in the collection. Visually you wouldn't know - but I know some movies aren't where they're supposed to be.. someday I'll have a bigger room with plenty of shelves..

And before any of you jump off a cliff because I said my nieces can pick and choose - they can go over and pick what they want to watch. But they are expressly forbidden from opening the case! And the good part is? My sister and her boyfriend are with me on this! SO they learned quite early on to not open the case! Bring it over to an adult and let them handle it.

Yeah, Ive decided to get rid of all my VHS... this will clear a large portion of room... I guess Il ltry and put them on EBay but im quite nervous about it, ive never sold anything on there before and I dont even know how much some of it is worth.

For example I have a double VHS copy of Akira :S I don't know if it is rare or not... either way it looks good.

:/ I know VHS dont really go for much on Ebay, but Id just prefer they went to good homes instead of getting chucked out.

Have you considered donating them? Would a childrens hospital or a library have a use for them?

Don't know if you have an equivalent, but I donate all my old "double dips" to the local VA (Veterans Administration) Hospital.

When I started collecting DVD's I owned about 500 VHS tapes (purchased movies and recorded from tv). The oldest tapes were from 1979. It seems that the tapes started self-erasing over the time (picture and sound decreased dramatically in quality). So finally I got rid of the complete collection.

Have you considered converting your collection to thinpacks?

I ran out of room, but instead of donating/selling anything, I converted all of my cases to thinpack and it shrunk the space about 40 - 50 percent.

Why not get rid of some of your double-dips?

But seriously, you missed the boat on VHS a while ago. Just donate them. The elderly love tape! ;) Don't be shy about Ebay, it's a doddle and I've used them for years. No point listing your tapes though.

Regards your CDs, why not archive them and encode them to a hard drive? I've got an external network drive with all my CDs encoded on it. I can play it via the computer or amplifier and haven't needed to open the cases in months. An mp3 player can hold your current playlist, etc.

EDIT: Just saw you said charity shops don't take VHS now! Surprised.

Honestly, there's nothing to it. I fold about a millimeter on each side of the cover. You don't even notice.

Now, granted, the first few are tough to do emotionally,, but once you do the few and see the difference, there is no problem doing the rest.

I just have to figure out what to do with all my slip covers. I know people collect them, I just need to figure out how to trade them for dvds or blu-rays.  ;D
