But as long as I do have the space, I wouldn't get rid of the cases.

Me neither. I'll even buy some movies for their case before the movie itself (see my recent purchase of Twilight 1/2).

A big part of the reason why I'm collecting DVD is that we often see in movies some houses where in the study, there are walls upon walls of books. I've always said one of my dreams is to have a room with all walls covered in DVD. I'm well on my way to accomplish it ;)

So throwing away the cases, for me, would reduce my enjoyment of the collection.

----------

As for how I organize, this is pretty much how I do it:
Rarely, I will keep something out of order that makes sense to me. For example I keep all 4 Die Hard movies together even thought the fourth should be listed under "L".

Exceptions:
  • TV shows are kept separate and in no particular order
  • Anime are on they own shelves in no particular order
  • The more "special" cases are on top of the shelf (Planet of the Apes head, Classic Monster collections with the busts, Schindler's List in a plexiglass case, etc.)

I have a few dressers from IKEA called Malm (for my keep cases, snappers and such), a shelf called Expedit and another shelf for my TV boxsets and movie boxsets. I am filling up a drawer alphabetically (about 100 keep cases per drawer) and when full I start with the next one. TV series have no special order except that season sets of a series are together, of course.
I then note the location in the notes field in DVD Profiler.

E.g.
M3-2 means, that I will find the DVD in drawer 2 of my third Malm. In this drawer it can easily be found because of alphabetical order.

Or:
E1-3-2 means that I can find the boxset in my (first) Expedit shelf in column 3 row 2

Before I had this system I had a few big shelves where I put all my DVDs alphabetically only seperated by case types.
But this was always a major task to re-order when I had gotten new purchases.

I am also one of those who doesn't get rid of the cases. Although I am also not one who buys something because of the case.
I would prefer that all releases have the same case type (keep case for DVD and HD Slim for Blu-ray). I don't like digipaks (except for TV seasons) or slip covers. I also see it a big plus if the season sets of one series all have the same case type and matching layout. Negative examples are the original releases of the Sliders sets or to minor degree the Babylon 5 sets (different layout dictated by the change of case type).

I like looking around my living room and seeing my collections. It wouldn't be the same if they were just in a binder. That goes for my vinyl, DVDs, CDs or books. I want them the way the came to me.

Exactly. I like to browse the shelves. When I try and use Profiler to pick a title, I more often than not end up discounting choices in favour of others for all sorts of reasons. I much prefer picking one at random, holding it aloft and yelling, "Yea, thy time is upon thee!".

I'm banned from several supermarket chains for much the same reason...

Hmm, wow I wouldn't ever be able to put my collection into binders, I love the cases to me they are the same as LP slip covers.

Infact, I actually went and bought the French version of Brother Bear after buying the English version purely because I love the cover French cover... if I ever saw the French 3 disc edition id buy that to the covers are amazing.

So Ive been thinking how can I organise my collections and, I seem to have the same alphabetical problem as everyone else :/ re organising everything once I get a new films... and so ive decided to split them into

TV Series
Anime
Animated films
Comedy
Action
Sci Fi
Other

Small amount of categories.... purley because I went in to Wilkinsons today and could only buiy 7 index card holders

Oooh, never gone as far as double-dipping for a sleeve! In fact, it took a while, but I finally sold my R1 Dances With Wolves after double-dipping (the R2 was a better edition, disc wise), but it was tough because the cover was gorgeous. A card sleeve with a Velcro clasp to imitate the diary and the actual sleeve was a wraparound panoramic vista.

I did take some HQ scans, but it fetched a few pounds and it seemed silly to hold onto something I was never going to watch again.

Mind you, I have still got the R3 edition that is unwatchable because there are no English subs in the right place, but that's a Limited Edition (actual leather case tied with a feather).

I have one shelf for animated movies, two for tv shows, and 2 other shelves for everything else.  The 2 main shelves are full with piles stacked on top.  The animation shelf still has some room and so does the tv show shelf.  The DVDs are alphabetical on the shelves.  I do have one section on the one shelf that is just the one type of case that I really don't like.  I think they are identified as snapper cases in profiler.  Warner Brothers use to use them all the time.  They stick out on the shelf more than the other cases and it bugged me, so I put them all together in what I call the crappy case section.  I know which shelf to go to for a certain movie.  I do have stuff stacked up in piles in a few places as well..some I'm waiting to watch and others that just don't fit on the shelves.

I keep all the cases.  I have all the cases for my CDs too.  I never liked the idea of taking things out of the case.

No organization at all

I've 6 shelfs on one of my wall (in fact they take the wall completly) and the dvd are place in it in the order I got them. But now they are full and my new dvd are place anywhere where I can find a place in my bedroom (I need some new shelfs, but I must find a free wall first...).

The only dvd for wich I use an order are my XXX one. They are in alphabetic order hidden in a big desk near my computer desk (I don't want my nephews to find them yet, not untill 5 or 6 years...).

Blu-ray separated and alphabetical
HD-DVD same thing
TV individual seasons on their own shelf and sorted alphabetically
Disney by itself sorted alphabetically
Holiday movies by them self and sorted alphabetically
Other "Kid Friendly" movies next to Disney movies and sorted alphabetically
Special collections by themselves and sorted numerically
TV full season box sets sitting on 2 shelves in the TV room - sorted by however I feel like.
Some Blu-ray special movies also on the above shelves (eg: Wizard of Oz gift set)
Signature Series all together on their own shelf and sorted alphabetically
DVD Movies  Sorted alphabetically... mostly. I put all the John Wayne movies under W.

New purchases... sit on a table in my office till I figure out where to put them.

In my case, it's they sit on my work desk until I watch them.. they then accumulate on a small table next to the shelves until I gather the courage to actually go through it and place them on the shelves..

.. but then the pile of "movies-to-sort" gets bigger and bigger, and then courage take that much longer to actually build up  :slaphead:

Everything alphabetically, movies and TV shows separated. Movie boxsets by box title within movies.

I would prefer that all releases have the same case type (keep case for DVD and HD Slim for Blu-ray). I don't like digipaks (except for TV seasons) or slip covers.

Me too. Even for TV shows, I prefer Keep Case. For example, TSCC S2 has 6 discs in a single Keep Case. And Arrow's re-release of The Eric Rohmer Collection even has 8 discs in a single Keep Case that is only 50% thicker than a normal Keep Case.

I forgot to mention that I have a few other box sets and full tv shows on top of shelves instead of on the shelves.  I have a few others, like the Pink Panther set, somewhere else.  There is no way that will fit on any of the DVD shelves.

I need more shelves...well wait.  I need more space to put more shelves in. :)
