I think it was just too weird for the american market.
But you are right .. most of the people I know don't really like subtitles but many of then will watch. I would rather not have subtitles .. if you are busy reading you aren't immersing in the film. But with out them you miss some good films.
Would be also interesting how the original fares when watched later.

Dialog heavy films, which s possibly spoken very fast, can be a problem, as you can hardly keep up with the text. Otherwise I find that I can quickly read the text and still catch enough of the performances to be engaged.
