...Whilst I think the Runaways would be a great film.... I think it would be an even better TV series

It is that Total Film have gone the Whedon route and Empire the Sollett one. I think Sollett sounds more likely. I know it's possible, but giving the directing gig to the guy who wrote a good portion of the stories doesn't feel like what they would do. Plus, Whedon is concentrating on The Cabin, I think. Doubt they'd trust him with another project until that's done, due to his largely undeserved history of box office failures.

I thought I read that Whedon might direct Marvel's The Avengers?  Or did someone get their projects confused?

Im not sure about the Avengers Roger :S I haven't heard much about it.

..I really don't Runaways deserves a film... a TV series or anime at most would be perfectly fine! its to big and wide a story to squash in to 120 minutes.

It's great news if they are giving it to Whedon. He deserves a leg up.

I saw someone on another forum ripping into him because of Alien 4. The fool. He wrote the screenplay, which was ignored by a mad Frenchman, that's why it failed. As a famous quote once said, in order of importance in a film crew, the screenwriter is one step below the security guard who opens the studio gates in the morning! Wish I could remember who said that; I know it was a famous (and bitter) writer...

But while we're on the subject, Whedon was also involved in Toy Story. One of the most entertaining films ever.

Its sadly true that often the writer has no say in the film sad really... we had a writer of an indy film come to talk to our class (don't remember the name) she said she was allowed on set for one day, but felt left shortly after arriving, she said it felt as though nothing she had written was coming out in the filming and that her suggestions were not listened to. I understand how she feels, we made a 5 minute Single Camera Drama for a unit, I wrote it... but the director slaughtered it, he missed out key scenes, and dialogue... the test screening even had audience members asking what was happening.

Some writers are aware that their original work may not be much more than a guideline to the director.

If a script is purchased and handed to a director then it's clearly becoming the director's work. I am no expert in any way, but my feeling is that a writer who sold his "book" expects phone calls for every change is not understanding the business either.

In few cases the writer is on set to help the director doing changes and cooperate rather closely; I guess that's the few happy cases.

I think no matter what the terms of something are, when you write something (or create anything) its like you baby, and you imagine it to be a certain way, and for things to happen a certain way, I know when I write scripts I imagine them in  my head... which often means that there is a ridiculous amount of description in certain scenes. But even with that it can be changed beyond what you ever imagined, sometimes it can be made so different your not even sure its your work anymore... and thats kinda sad really.

Achim, 'The Runaways' that is in cinemas at the moment is the one with Dakota Fanning and Kristin Stewart about the all girl rock band with Joan Jett. Nothing to do with the marvel comic, just happen to share the same name.
