Honestly, I think having spots for them in there too is nice. 

Seriously, do any of them have a favorite spot on the shelves, or do they just go anywhere?

My cats kind of go where ever, though Lillie is partial to the one chair...and of course her treat perch.

I just realized I never answered this - sorry Marie.

My cats go wherever they like. I have built shelves and hidey-holes all over my house for them. The advantages of not being married or having children...cat heaven!

That's ok.

Mine kind of go where they want too. 
Elmo tends to like the one window seat.  Lillie will sleep in one spot for a while - a few weeks or so - and then move on to a new spot.
Jenna likes to get on top of the cable box in the living room.  Hayley tends to nap in here - the computer room - a lot.  There is a love seat in here..and my old toy chest that my grandma built me.  Hayley is snoozing on the toy chest right now.
There is a chair in front of one window for the cats..and a tote in front of another one for them.
