One of the finest science fiction movies ever, Fassbinder's Welt am Draht (DE 1973, World on a Wire), has been released in the UK in an English-friendly version. I briefly talked with Achim about the German release in the Whatya-got thread.

I can really recommend this movie/mini series.  :thumbup:

I own the German release (I've been waiting a long time for it)!

I'm quite a Daniel F. Galouye (the author of the story this is based on) fan, and am very excited to learn of an English-friendly release. The book (Simulacron-3 aka Counterfeit World) is an excellent read.

Me too. As I told Achim, I saw the original airing as a kid. It was a mind-boggling and unforgettable experience. The virtual reality concept may no longer have the the same impact as it had in the '70s (or the '60s, if you take the book), but the hard-scifi approach and the unique style make it still stand out as a masterpiece.

Btw, I find it a bit sad that I didn't see any reviews for this on the usual sites, not even on DVDTimes, which normally picks up on the slightly more obscure stuff. If I hadn't visited the Second Sight website for other reasons, I wouldn't have known that there has been a UK release. Maybe the name Fassbinder scares away the typical scifi crowd?

I've always wanted to delve into Fassbinder's films. Is this a good place to start? Or should I try something else?

Yes and no. While he works here with his long-time cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and a couple of his favorite actors and while some of the antics typical for early Fassbinder are on display here, this is a rather untypical Fassbinder film. Which can be a good thing. But a more "proper" starting point would probably be the BRD Trilogy (Maria Braun, Lola, Veronika Voss).

Not to forget "Angst essen Seele auf" aka "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" (1974) . I have the German release, but I found an international release at Amazon.com
