Cinematic Collection Viewer
« on: December 31, 2009, 11:41:09 AM »
I thought I'd make a thread for my tool "Cinematic Collection Viewer" for those who are not visiting the other forum but have questions (I know I lack help documentation. It is one of those things that I always had planned to do but never came around to it).

You can find the tool on my website.

What is it for?
This is a database front end (with an Access database behind it) for managing your collections. Initially solely for movie collections, I also use it for my Manga collection). Originally thought as an extension to the DVD Profiler database it can also be used on its own.

Here some of the key features:
  • Import DVD Profiler XML
  • TV Episode Handling
  • SQL Queries (Exchanging, discussing and asking for help for SQL queries is very welcome in this thread]
  • Awards display
  • Export as HTML. Example see my Online-Collection
  • Headshots support
  • Online source for TV episode data, awards, SQL queries and more

History:
The CCViewer first came about during the time, that DVD Profiler 2.5 was in development hell. During that time it was promised, that DVD Profiler will have episode handling in the future. So I started a project asking the community to start collecting episode based cast and crew data for when the time comes. To put this data into use before that time, I created a "TV Cast & Crew Viewer". I then started to put features into it, which I missed in DVD Profiler (cross-linking, headshots, SQL, awards, episode assign to profiles, HTML export (replacing Doug's DVDProfiler Companion which did not work with Profiler 3, different collection types other than Owned/Ordered/Wishlist, additional information like IMDb links, Wikipedia links, reviews). Some of those features are still not supported in Profiler (or not to my satisfaction). I soon renamed the tool to "Cast & Crew Viewer".
Later on I was not satisfied with this name anymore, because it was not solely a cast and crew viewer anymore. So I went on search for a new name. Because this tool was mainly known as "Tom's Viewer" in the community and I always liked to appreviate it with CCV or CCViewer, I wanted to retain those letters. Madacid (my faithful beta tester) had proposed "Cinematic Collection Viewer" and this name stuck.

Tom, I must apologise, I had no idea your viewer could do proper SQL queries. I must give this a try.  :-[

I can't get this program to work. When I start it up I get this...

It says it's loading, but nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong?

Just click the "New" button to create a database, and then click OK and you're good to go.

You'll have to import the XML from DVD Profiler, then you could update some data (awards, etc.)

I will rename the dialog to "Select database" for the next version. I think that would be less confusing.

Version 2.5
Change: Special handling of group dividers to be able to see role names of group members in appearances search
Fix: Minor tweak in profile editing combobox
Fix: Export IsRegular with Viewer Collection File and TV Series export

I am releasing this now, even though I haven't changed much. But the first change I think is an important one because of the ever-increasing use of group dividers. You'll need to reimport the Profiler XML file to have the full effect.

I need beta testers:
I have added a new field called "CustomTitle". You can enter now a custom title for each profile. E.g. it can be used to enter the English title for an Asian movie of your German DVD profile. It includes new skin tag CUSTOM_TITLE and option View->Use custom title
This change is affect a lot of parts throughout the program, so I would appreciate some beta testers before I release a new version.
If you are interested, please download
this zip file and replace the CCViewer.exe in your installation with the included new exe file. Please report any issues you have to me. Thanks! :)

Other changes in this beta version:
New: New setting for including profiles of certain collection types in Owned tab
Change: SetAutoAlias function updated to current Invelos common name filter
Change: Use title if original title is empty on import of IMDb Data
Fix: Crash at loading HTML Export form

Hey Tom... think I may have goofed up. I went to get Episode Data... and clicked ok... and suddenly realized that I was downloading also for shows I don't have. So I clicked the X in the top corner to stop it. And when I went to do it again to check off the series I actually have... it don't bring up the box and just freezes. Ideas?

Probably it was still trying to finish up the last action it was doing. If you press the X, it will get a cancel signal and it will stop at the instances were I put possible stops. Probably it was still finishing downloading the data of one of the series.
