I've read all of the Harry Potter and Twilight books and seen the movies also. It has been many, many decades since I have been a teenager so that impacts my reading/viewing experience.

The Harry Potter books are a good read but nothing more. I enjoyed them but would never read them over and over again like I do LOTR. I did enjoy the movies and do watch them every once in a while.

The first Twilight book I struggled to get through, the others were much better. I would place my enjoyment of them on par with Harry Potter. The movies were okay too. I doubt I will watch them more than a couple of times.

But, I don't consider either of them masterpieces of either fiction or cinema.

You make it sound like it was in the last century or something.

The Twilight hype is predominatly squeling teenage girls ...

It's a good thing you weren't around for "The Beatles" phenomenon!     :slaphead:

Not only were they "squealing", but they were fainting dead away!!!!!   :suicide:

Apparently, they haven't changed much in the past 45 years!   :hmmmm:

I haven't read either series, but I do enjoy the Potter films, regardless of their various faults.

But to back up Sophie, what is obvious is the basic readable quality of Harry Potter, so much so, I know a lot friends who have read them and really enjoyed them. It spread like wildfire where I used to work and a couple of them bought the final book on day of release. I stress though that they are rather normal people!

On the other hand, I don't know any of them that have read any Twilight, because while it seems the two series should be for the same demographic, they aren't. Twilight is for 12 year old girls. Potter is for kids and adults who remember being kids.

Still I've never quite forgiving J. K. Rowling for clearly ripping off 2000ad's brilliant story, Luke Kirby and The Summer of Magic. Guess what? It was about a kid who finds out his family is false and actually, he's a powerful wizard. There was something about his uncle too, but I can't remember now. It was fairly serious, so Potter ends up being naive for me, though that's only because of the unfair comparison.

Has Matthias ever been compelled to employ the Surrender smiley before? :hysterical:

What's that supposed to mean?  :redcard:

Interesting. I never heard that before.

See Sophie, Meyer at least is a unique auteur with her glitter-vamps and push-shifters, while Rowling is just a plagiator.

So after all this New Moon talk last night I was motivated to finally watch it.  After about 30 or 35 minutes of Bella moping around, the DVD freezes up.  I can't fast forward or rewind.  I can't go to the next chapter.  I can't even get the main menu for the disc to come up.  I had to eject the thing out.  I looked for smudges or scratches and didn't see any and tried again, using the scene selection to get to about where it happened...and it happened again.  So I ejected the disc again..and tried again.  This time I went to the next scene and tried rewinding a bit...it was working..and then it froze up too.   :redcard: So back to ejecting and the scene selection..I rewind a little and then start playing and all seems fine.

So another hour of Bella acting like an idiot, and it happens again.    The scene selection wasn't working too well this time either.  I finally managed to see the end of the movie, though I missed parts.

The first movie wasn't my favorite and I have issues with the books...but since I decided I wanted to watch the movie, I wanted to watch it without problems.  That annoyed me to no end.

This evening I took the DVD back and exchanged it - and just my luck, lots of other people had to be returning or exchanging stuff at the same time.  But I got the DVD replaced.  I'll try it later tonight to see if it works.  If this one is screwed up too, I'll really get annoyed.

Since this is considered a high profile title, it probably has a new copy protection. In fact, I remember the title popping up in the usual forums a few months ago, but didn't pay much attention. The problem with these non-standard DVDs is that the protection sometimes causes the DVD to not play properly on regular players.

Oh goody.  I hadn't seen anything about that.
Well hopefully this new copy will work.  It isn't one of my favorites and I liked it less than the first one - but I expected that because of how I felt about the book - but I still want the thing to play properly when I do decide to watch it.

Silly you. Wanting to be able to watch a DVD you paid for.

I used to refuse to buy any DVDs with that structure protection crap whether it caused problems or not, but nowadays that's just impossible. Even on obscure arthouse titles that stuff appears now (latest I found it on was the BFI release of Institute Benjamenta).

I kind of remember hearing something about some of the protection stuff causing issues with some movie before..but that's been a while and I haven't kept up with that stuff.  I guess I didn't realize it was still an issue.

Oh I know.  I did manage to see most of it.  I just want the DVD to work in case I decide to watch the movie again for some reason.
