We've even had a couple around where I live. One threw me out of my bed one day!

We had one here in 1988, but never felt the first one in the night (I was sleeping like a baby since I was on a valium medication). The next day was a different story since I was in a shopping center and it was a run fast as you can exit for most of the people inside. Me and my friend we just walked slowly trough the exist talking about how it would be easy to stole some money from the deserted shop

Of course we haven't done that, but it's the kind of thought who pass trough the mind of 2 eighteen years old teenagers

I should clarify that I was just trying to join in the conversation, but actually our earthquakes were tiny farts compared to proper ones. No-one running out of shops! More quizzical looks at one another...  It took a chimney stack down off a neighbour, but that was the extent.

It was the panik for most people, but not us... The shopping center would never had collapsed, but a lot of thing were fallen in the store. In fact the running was a much bigger risk of injury... Of course our region had a lot of damage but nothing that big.

The 1994 flood was a real disaster, but not the end of the world as it was described in some media

Sadly, this seems to happen every year here in the UK. As soon as a forecaster so much as sniffs a snowflake, all the media go into overdrive. "SNOW! WE'RE ALL GOING TO FREEZE! How much is coming? 4-6cm you say? HOW WILL WE SURVIVE!!??!! ARGH!"

 

As my mum always says, when she was a kid, Britain tended to have much worse snow drifts, yet everyone just got on with it without the moaning. Now, all the schools shut and we get field reporters on the news updating us by the hour about how many gritters are moving out, like it's a military campaign. The idiots.

The entire east coast is setting records for snow...my grass is still green!

And a side note, Keanu Reeves has been filming in Buffalo and Niagara Falls this week...so we do have something "cool" happening!

It's "funny" how winter "suddenly" happens to be every year around the same time. When the first snow comes there are huge traffic jams and crashs and everything. Why? Because snow! In winter!!

Here's everything still dry tough. We had a few flakes on friday but it didn't even really touch the ground befpore melting again.

I'm sorry, but the UK has nothing on New England. We're about to get hit with a Nor'Easter in southern New England and there isn't a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk to be had anywhere. The sad thing is, the storm is going to wallop where I live, but pretty much stay away from the major metro areas. But that isn't stopping every weatherman and news anchor from portending the inevitable gloom of what's about to happen. They'll be lucky to get a couple of inches.

The only time Ive ever seen snow was when it was in the gutters of the streets in Russia. I would love to go skiing or something one day. I can't even imagine it snowing on christmas! To me that's insane. Christmas in Aus follows a nice tradition of having a bbq on the beach.

At one point he came up to us, fascinated by a flake that had settled on his hand and acting like he'd just been told the secret of eternal youth or something.

Haha Jon I can only imagine I'd be exactly the same. Even the thought of a snow fight, or making a snow man amazes me. And it's not like there isn't snow in Australia, a good days drive during winter and I would be in very popular skiing areas, for some reason I just never have been to the snow. One day though I will be there, probably falling over constantly while trying to ski

It's only been snowing for about 2 1/2 hours and I've already got over 4 inches on the ground. The red circle in the middle is where I live. The red circle on the left side shows the intensity of the snowfall. At the rate it's falling at the moment, which is about 1 1/2 inches per hour, and with the slow speed of this storm, I could wind up getting close to 16 inches before it stops.

Last time I looked outside, it was still snowing.  It has been steady since last night, though not real heavy.  So far we haven't gotten as much as they said we would.  Though there are weather emergencies in the state.  Course my stupid county just changed how they report them...the rest of the state has one way that has worked for years...but this area has to go and make something new with colors.  Last I heard it was code green.

My state just did something similar but instead of snow, with bushfire warnings. Before we had very high, severe and extreme (as well as the low ones). We still have them now but they have recently added a new one which is 'Catastrophic' rating or "code red". It's enough to make one panic when they hear of the catastrophic fire danger, but I suppose after Black Saturday last year they really need it.
