A Little October Statistik
« on: October 31, 2009, 11:40:14 PM »
In recent months I noticed that I don't watch a whole lot of actual TV anymore and I decided to find out exactly. Thus, I created a log for my watchings.

And I was right. The only thing I actually did watch on TV was the news - not even 3 hours total in the entire month.

My consumation of DVD and Net content on the other hand was fairly balanced.

MediumMinutesHoursDaysAverage in h%
Net339856.62.41.848.2
DVD348758.12.41.949.4
TV1712.90.10.12.4
Total7056117.64.93.8100.0

You can clearly see the weekends. ;) (except for the one where I was in Berlin)

Who needs TV anymore?

Who needs TV anymore?

I surely don't. I haven't watched regular TV for years. News I am watching as a podcast (Tagesschau. Available as full version and a 100 seconds digest version). I only watch DVDs. I also stopped watching net content years ago, when TV shows started to be released on DVD more and more.

I don't keep track of such things but, unless there is a sporting event I don't want to miss, I often don't turn the TV on for days. I still use it to watch my DVDs though (even if I do forget to write a review after!).

When I ordered the internet they offered me basic cable for an additional $5 a month for a year - I turned it down. The shows I wanted, ESPN and ESPN 2, were on the next available tier which was an additional $45 a month - forget it.

I remember when cable was brand new and the idea was you paid for cable because there were no commercials. Now it is no better than regular free television. And for $45 a month in savings I can buy a season or two every month of any TV series I want. And I don't have to watch commercials!

I do watch stuff on tv, though I don't keep track.  I have started watching more online in the last month or so.

I used to watch the occasional movie on TV but ever since I got my HD TV the TV image just looks too ugly to bear it for too long. It is merely acceptable for documentary style channels like Animal Planet or Discovery. Besides, with my DVDs and PS3 gaming I don't really have a need for TV in the regular sense.

For me the TV is more a background noise than anything else. Except for RDI (a news channel like CNN but in french), I don't watch anything religiously. I don't like to be harass by publicity and it's worse and worse on television. Most of what I watch is on the "find it zapping" category. I don't pay for the cable since it come with the rent and if it wasn't the case I wouldn't have it.

No need for cable when you own more than 1500 movies/TV series, 266 hours of music, the internet and a computer with all the game you need.
