I read this today, from David Allen Sibley's book "The Sibley Guide to Trees", and thought it was interesting:
"If you planted an acorn today, no matter how young and healthy you are, you would not live long enough to see it as a fully mature oak tree. It is possible to see trees that were alive when Columbus landed in the New World, and even some that were old in the time of Julius Caesar."
