Review dates on front page random reviews.
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:43:38 PM »
Karsten it's not a big deal but if you feel like it I think it'd be nice if we had the review date on the random reviews in the front page.  Maybe along with the link at the bottom like (From Eric's DVD Watching on June 27, 2008)

This is something which I wanted to propose for ages but never came around to it.

Speaking of the Random Reviews on the front page, I just keyed it up and for the first time found that the two movie reviews up were the same reviews!  I got two copies of Rich's review of The Life of David Gale (I think I got the name right).  Is the computer a big Kate Winslet fan?

Thanks Karsten.

Now if I can push my luck ......   :tomato:

date_format( from_unixtime( postertime ) , '%a. %b %D, %Y' ) in the "select" statement would display the date as "Wed. August 19th, 2009".

It's just easier for the french speaking people who are use to "dd/mm/yyyy" date as opposed to english 'mm/dd/yyyy'

When I see a review posted on '2009-05-02' I never know if it's February of May.

When I post my deadlines, I always use this ISO-Format. Because writing it is 02/05/2009 or 05/02/2009 would always confuse one side. But 2009-05-02 is standardized and the most logical. Reading from left to write will pinpoint the date further. First the year, then the month and then the day.

As for the date... the way it is now is the best way in my opinion...

The way Tom says always confused me (especially beginning of a month) as all I was ever taught in school is (for today)... August 19, 2009 and 8/19/2009 whenever I see the year first I always got confused by it.  :bag:

I don't understand it, how you can be confused by the year first. This format is different than the one you are used to, for sure, but with the year first it is a clear sign, that a different format is used and you know what is meant here. If I used the format used in England for example (19/8/2009), you would be confused more I would think. Or if I would use the German format 19.8.2009.
I never understood why one would use 8/19/2009. I doesn't go from highest to lowest nor lowest to highest, but mixes it all up  :P

Well... think about it. I was never taught that different format. Even though it is obvious that the first number is the year... but especially at the beginning of the month I have no way to know if it is going Year Month  Day or Year Day Month. Since I was never taught such a thing I have no idea what other people will write... so can't be sure.

As you said... our standard mixes it all up. Because of that we know it CAN be mixed all up. So how are we to know?

It is just me... the way I am... if it is neither way I was taught then it will confuse me because I have no idea what the person that wrote it is thinking when they wrote it.

19/8/2009 wouldn't confuse anyone because there's only 12 months in a year Tom  :tease:

The problem is not whether it's logical or not, what bothers me is that since dates are stored as a numeric value I never know what format string was used or how it was converted by the software and/or the programmers.  Having the month in text fixes that issue.

Granted that yyyy-dd-mm would not be in any know and accepted formats, it could still be seen on internet if a programmer screws up or doesn't know what he's doing.

August 19, 2009 leaves very little doubt as long as one can read english.

I also was not taught to use the year month day approach. But in my opinion this is the best compromise in an international forum. You will never get me to write mm/dd/yy, and I would never expect you to know dd/mm/yy or dd.mm.yy (the later is the one I am used to). This is why I use the international standard format yyyy-mm-dd. I always thought the year first is a clear sign that I am not using any regional format. I will continue using it, because in my opinion it is the format of all the ones mentioned, which should cause the least confusion.

I wasn't trying to convince you to change anything on how you do stuff. But I did want you to realize it may not be as well known and understood as you thought it was... as I for one never understood that way personally. And if it confuses me... you know it will confuse other people as well. I am definitely not the only person in the world it would confuse.

That's why I always use the short or long name for the month. So If I write 19 Aug 09 or August 19, 2009 it should be clear to everyone what I mean.
