I'm Feeling a Bit Blu Today
« on: November 25, 2007, 10:30:19 PM »
I'm officially format neutral in the HD war. I went to WalMart with my son yesterday to get a PS3 with the 15 free movies.... for him.

When we got to the 1st store they had none. Figured as much. The cashier was nice enough to call two other stores, one wouldn't answer the phone, the other didn't have any left. We grabbed some "other stuff" and left. Headed to Target. On the way we decided to swing by the WalMart that didn't answer their phone. My son has recently purchased an HDTV and all the gadgets to go with it so he really wanted this PS3 deal.

When we arrived we went straight to the electronics department. No way they would have it... right? "Sure... we have 2 left" the guy said.

But we only needed one.... :-\

but it's 15 free Bluray movies....

but I already have an HD Player....  :weirdo:

did I mention it was 15 free Bluray movies...   :o

 ???

 :surrender: I couldn't resist

So now I have a both formats. I know I would not have purchased a "stand alone" bluray player but I did see myself having the PS3 at some point. I just didn't know Saturday was that point

I'm totally jealous.  I've been checking for a game console lately because I want to get Assassin's Creed and I'm just too much of an impulsive kid (did I mention I'll be 44 in 2 months  :-[) to wait until it's released on PC.

Of course I haven't decided yet wether I'm gonna go with HDDVD or BluRay so I don't know if I want a XBOX or a PS3.  In the end I decide to be reasonable and wait until the game is released for PC...........so I spend 225$ on a CB radio for my truck (that's my way of being reasonable  :-[ :-[).

Now I find out that I could have shopped around, get a PS3, Assassin's Creed and 25 BluRay movies........I'm jealous...........and not having a true HD tv doesn't change that  :voodoo:

I went format neutral yesterday (in the dual sense  ) when I went to Best Buy to pick up an HD DVD Bogo purchase...and also came home with a Blu-ray player and 5 BD discs.  :stars:

Had a brief hiccup when I discovered my player is an HDMI-outtie and my HDTV is a DVI-innie.  :slaphead: Fortunately, this was nothing that a $63 cable couldn't fix.  :weirdo:

Can we just have a brief moment of silence for how awesome Pixar looks in Hi Def?  :o

James, it's exactly that kind of comments that make me wish the format war was over and I could get into this myself...

I found myself wondering if purchasing Blade Runner on DVD was the right thing to do :hmmmm: or if I should have waited for HD. Then again, who know when the war will be over...

Prices are coming down and hopefully that dual player will get cheaper too.

Congratulations James!  I predict I'll be dual format by my birthday in March.  Especially if the prices keep coming down.  What I'm really waiting for is to see what WB does at CES.  There's rumors that they might pick one format.  And if they go blue, I'll be dual format for sure.  If they go red, I might wait to see what fallout that brings.

This could edge things a little.

I have been neutral on which format to go for, over the past few months TBH. Although if pushed I would've gone for HDDVD.
I'm just not a fan of Sony. No other reason.

Yep, that Warner announcement sure sent a rather strong signal...

For me too I would have loved to see HD DVD to come out as a winner; not liking Sony all that much being a reason as well.

As for my previous post, I since have realized that buying the DVD version of Blade Runner was indeed the right thing to do. I bough the Limited Edition with the briefcase; so when the time comes to move up to hidef I won't have to worry that the briefcase is no longer available, I'll just add the regular release to the case and then still have it all.

From where did you get that briefcase?

I ordered it when it was first announced at The Digital Bits back in July ;D They had a link to Amazon with an additional discount of $5 or so... Now it's the same price though: $54.99. :bag:

Blur-Ray.  :o
Too many r's on your keyboard....? It looks like you are shocked that Blu-ray looks so blurred :hysterical:

But yes, Blu-ray is jaw dropping amazing at its best. While watching Planet Earth I kept repeating "this is beautiful" every 5 minutes, probably to the annoyance of the friend who watched with me.

So does that mean you have a Blu-Ray player now? :)

I want one...was tempted a few months ago when the price on one dropped..but it sold out before I gave in and then the store got the new model in.  So..I'm still waiting.  But I want one.

Oh yes, I have one. I've seen it running briefly in shops, but they don't do it justice because they have low-quality feeds. And the TV I bought is 100hz and able to use 24fps which means it just looks so real. Takes a bit of getting used to actually because sometimes it looks like those cheap full motion video sequences you get in games! Or digital camcorders.
