Star Trek and affordable don't belong in the same sentence!  :tease:

That was long true (I bought TNG back in 2002 and DS9 back in 2003 when the season cost 100-110€) but by now you get them on Amazon UK for 15£ (18€).

At least in Europe.

They are getting close to what I would be able to afford. The next season of Star Trek: TNG is down to $47 brand new. While manageable... I would like to see it come down a little more.

I'd probably watch "The Cage" first.  As Tom says, it has a completely different cast except Spock.  The other person you'll recognize is Majel Barrett as Number 1.

Cool... so what I think I will do is watch The Cage first... and then go in air date order for the 3 seasons.

Most of the footage of "The Cage" was re-used (and I think slightly retconned) in the season 1 two-parter "The Menagerie".

I have a couple more quick questions about Star Trek...

According to the insert there is 2 versions of The Cage...

The Cage (Re-Edited)
The Cage (B&W)

Which would you suggest for the episode review thread... or does it matter?

The episode Space Seed on Volume 12... the overview says...

" This episode led to the sequel movie, Star Trek™ II: The Wrath of Khan. "

I am going to do a Star Trek Movie Marathon this weekend... should I watch Space Seed before  I see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan?

If so I will still watch the episode again for the episode review thread and review it there. But if for the story I should watch it to understand the storyline a little better then I want to.

I don't remember which one I watched, but I'd suggest the original, not the re-edit.

I would watch the re-edited version of The Cage (this is the one I have seen). The B&W version was the only version believed to have survived at first. But in the 80s the original color prints were found and the original colored version was then restored.

Regarding "Wrath of Khan" and "Space Seed": Though it would be nice to watch "Space Seed" first, it is not essential to do so. I myself only saw it years after I have first seen "Wrath of Khan".

Pete,

I don't think it really matters which version of The Cage you watch.  Like mentioned above, some color parts were "found" later.  You'll notice however, that it is not all in color.  It switches back and forth, depending on what source material they had.  Since the rest of the series is in color, I'd probably watch the re-edited version.

I would definitely watch Space Seed before watching The Wrath of Kahn, since you have it it in hand.  It provides some background for the movie. You certainly could watch the movie first and still fully understand and appreciate it (I think it's the best of all the movies), but I suggest you take the 45 minutes and watch Space Seed first.

Pete, I think you know the classic crew: Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu & Checkov. When you watch Space Seed, try to notice who's NOT there and then watch TWOK.

The "story" is that he was a lowly crewman at the time of Space Seed and that's why we didn't see him.  Truth is he didn't show up until the second season!
