(Rock) Concert Films
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:21:10 PM »
In their monthly conversations series at The House Next Door, Jason Bellamy and Ed Howard talk about rock concert films:
http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/2010/10/the-conversations-rock-concert-films/

Funny coincidence, because just a few days ago, I rewatched the two films that remain my favorites in this particular genre (although only one of them is covered in the discussion above). Both films were made in the '80s, and if bad hair and disco music is the first thing that pops in your mind, you couldn't be more wrong.

Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads)
Home of the Brave (Laurie Anderson)

In both films, the performance is as important as the music and there is a physical awareness to it, a cerebral physicality, for lack of a better term, that is quite unique. BTW, favorite concert films doesn't necessarily mean favorite music. There are a good number of musicians I like more than the ones in those films.

So what are your favorite concert films?
Matthias

I only remember seeing one concert film, at the cinema even. It was Queen's We Will Rock You which I quite liked; easily, since I quite like their music to begin with  while they were clearly great stage performers, it is not comparable to the two films you mentioned.

Normally I feel it is strange to sit down and watch a concert on DVD, the whole atmosphere is missing; stuff like the two films you mentioned actually exempted. However, last time I was in Germany I bought two Blu-ray with concertS; the before-mentioned Queen concert (which contains their famous performance at Live Aid) and AC/DC's concert at Donington(?) in 1992(?). Hmmm, I also own the Live Aid concert DVDs, but haven't watched them yet (see above); unfortunately Led Zeppelin did not give permission to have their performance on the disc...

Does Monty Python's Live at the Hollywood Bowl count?

One of the greatest shows ever:

Pink Floyd: The Wall - Live in Berlin

Another one I like (for no reason at all):

ABBA: The Movie
(not exactly from one concert, but from a tour, but at least they tried to give it something like a story)

Like Achim, anything with "Queen" in the title is a winner (their Live Aid set was simply the finest rock performance ever ), but I recognise they aren't films as such. Nevertheless, I did review On Fire At The Bowl here: http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,5638.msg98411.html#msg98411

Does Anvil count?  :hmmmm: Probably not as it isn't a "concert", but just because I never miss an opportunity to go on about it: http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,5638.msg98280.html#msg98280
