Unrelated non-scientific poll about emails
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:02:07 PM »
This morning a friend send me another one of those emails with dozens of email addresses in the "To" field, exposed for all to see....including spam trojans and viruses.

I repeatly tell my friends that they should never send emails this way because it's not right nowadays to publish other's email addresses without consent but they don't seem to get it.

A quick survey around friends shows that most people don't consider email addresses a "real" address and although they would never give out somebody's living address they don't see where the problem is in sharing email addresses.

Most actually find it cool because "they start getting funny stuff from people they don't even know".

So I'm wondering, how do YOU do it ?

I very rarely do group emails. If I do those in the group already know each others' address so I typically just put in the TO field.

I have send a few group emails to work associates. Those I use the BCC field for the addresses.

I'm a bit anti-social regards viral emails so hardly send any, but if I did, blind copy is only right.

People are so naive about email, I just can't fathom how they think. As the IT Support guy at work, they like to pull my leg about being the Internet police, too uptight about things like this, etc. However, several of them have brought me their laptops to clean up and they're invariably infested with viruses and spyware. I can't remember the last time I got a virus from an email, yet they still can't see the irony.

What I don't understand is why the big players in email clients development don't do something about it.  If the To, CC and BCC fields were all processed the same way as the BCC field I think at least 90% of the spam would be eliminated within a year..........oh wait......can't do that.........who's gonna pay for anti-spam software if spam is eliminated........silly me.........4th resolution for 2009.........try to be smarter :slaphead:

It depends.

When I send an eMail for an invitation or to a small group I use the TO field. When I am sending funny stuff like jokes and the like I always use the BCC field because I know this stuff will be forwarded and not everyone will be so kind and remove the header info when he/she presses "forward".

At work I use the TO and CC fields. I do, however, not send any of those "viral" mails myself (or at least just very very rarely...).

For private stuff I use the TO field, as it's usually information for a group of people I know and it will hardly be forwarded beyond that.

I will, however, keep the advise of this thread in mind.
