I haven't seen the new version, but I just can't comprehend how they can possibly get the same effect.

How dare you even ask! It was the original version, and the Director's Cut. The DVD gives you a choice, but only the Theatrical has a 5.1 remix. Even in mono and with variable video quality I think the DC is worth seeing.
