iPhone/iPod touch games/apps recommendation
« on: September 27, 2008, 10:04:00 PM »
As far as I know, only Achim has an iPod touch beside myself here, but I thought I'll open up a thread nonetheless.

Currently I have a new game I am playing with, to which I am getting slowly addicted:

GalCon
In this real-time strategy game you have to conquer planets by moving your ships to it. The bigger the planet you have occupied, the faster additional ships are built. The game moves really fast. Usually one round is over within a minute.
There are two versions of this game:
GalCon Lite is the free version where you can play all difficulty levels with the basic gameplay.
Then there is a version to buy, which has multiplayer mode (via network or internet) and a lot of different gameplays. Normally it costs $10 but for this week only, it has an offer for $5. Well worth it!

There is also a desktop version of this game, though I haven't tried this one yet.

Another game I have bought in the past:
Poker MotionX
This is a dice game. You roll the dices by shaking your iPhone/iPod with a nice simultion of the rolling dices. You have to beat the dealer for each round with your rolled hand. Besides collecting points by winning, you also have to achieve different things to collect gems. Like winning three times in a row with a specific hand. Fun game to pass the time.

That video didn't work for me,.. So I went to YouTube and searched for Galcon and found even a few game play videos from users. Looks interesting. I still have some money in my iTunes account, maybe I'll get it.

BTW, good idea for a thread!

I recommend Air Sharing. I got it for free during its first 2 weeks but now it costs $6.99. It's a little program that allows you to put files on your iPhone/iPod touch using a wireless connection. Many major file formats (incl. MS Office before 2007) can then even be viewed right in the device! If you don't have a use for such function, that program is not for you

I also got Air Sharing while it was free. I haven't used it yet. Before I had bought a similar program (DataCase), because I wanted it to use for my Profiler Collection. My next version of the CCViewer will have HTML export that I wanted to use for this. But DataCase had problems with HTML pages using CSS. Also the app crashed after a few minutes when trying to transfer a lot of files.

I will have to try, if Air Sharing can handle it better.

Download Galcon Lite first. You get a pretty good idea with the free version. But you will have to be fast buying the full version. I think the half-off offer is over soon.

It works :)

Now I "only" have to create a skin which is better suited for the iPod display.

Nice undocumented feature on iPhone/iPod touch:
Pressing the OFF button while holding the HOME button will take a screenshot and save it to the Photos application.

I read a lot of bad reviews about DataCase so I didn't spend money for that. Air Sharing does what I wanted and it was free at the time. My friend then also wanted it and unfortunately we downloaded it the day after the free offer expired. But $6.99 is not really that much.

The one I had previously considered (and still am) to use for DVD Profiler is CSV touch. It can read a csv file form the internet and then read it almost like a database, or so. Of course, pictures would be missing; space is an issue but all my thumbnails are only around 50MB...

Did both as suggested. Played a few rounds so far and think it's fantastic. Played in Easy mode, so I always won, but I am looking forward to sink my teeth into the harder levels.

It works :)

You gotta be kidding me. This hadn't really even occurred to me! It's HTML with frames...? Give me some more details and maybe I'll look into it! DVD Profiler on my iPod touch (later to be iPhone) would be great!

:o

Yup, didn't know. Tried it out and it works great. I expected the IPod to still turn off so I had taken a couple of shots before I realized that that screen flashing was the screen capture... :hysterical:

I don't have either, but I've recently been looking into getting an iPhone, but I think I'll wait until after Christmas.  My biggest problem is that I don't have a phone and haven't for 8 or 9 years.  So I'm having a real hard time justifying paying a monthly bill for at least 2 years for something I'm not really sure I need.  Then I looked into the Touch, but it doesn't have a camera.  I think I'd use the phone (a little) if I had it, but I'm not 100% certain.  I just want the cool toy!

Yes, it is HTML with frames. A HTML export generated by CCViewer. This functionality will be part of the next Viewer release.
Because I do not own a Mac I do not have a chance to develop a real iPhone App. I would have tried otherwise. Because of this I am now trying to use HTML. I found something, which can be used to browse through the collection list in a iPhone app-like fashion. But I haven't got it to work to load the html for the profile using this method (on my Windows PC with FF3 it works though, maybe a problem with AirSharing).
If you'd like, you can be a beta-tester. Just contact me then. Maybe together we can create a workable solution to have a nice Mobile Profiler alternative for our iPods.

I don't really used the CCViewer so far (I did a long while back, but not at all since I moved to Mac), but for this I just may have to start again. Count me in!

I received your mail :) Will install the viewer shortly and see what it does. Also will take a look at the linking problem you mentioned in the mail...

I will, give you a new address with my reply as I am planning to cancel the CompuServe account within this year...

I think I have found the solution for the linking problem.

The iPhone version of my HTML collection should now work on the iPhone  ;D
The regular HTML collection can be found here.
