I have just discovered this website and of course went immediately to the foreign section.  I am a huge fan of foreign films, have a very large collection, and would be more than happy to make recommendations.  If there is a certain type of film, from a certain country, etc., just let me know and I'll make a list with a brief description for you.

Welcome to the forum Marincat.  I'm curious, the two movies that I have "bolded" in the list are french movies.  Unless I'm mistaking "Manon of The Spring" is "Manon des sources".  All these foreign films that you have, do you watch them in thei original version or are they dubbed ?

Yes, both of the films in bold are French.  The first 4 are Italian.  None of the films I own are dubbed since I find that very distracting!  They all have subtitles.  The movie titles listed are in English, but they all have their native language titles as well.

Being a Kiwi pretty much means everything Hollywood makes is a foreign film to me.

But seriously, I like all kinds of films, from each and every corner of the world. If I type a list it would be humongous, really. I tend to like more films that take risks, that try consistently to do something different. For a brief example, I really dig everything David Cronenberg does. I think he may be one of the smartest, boldest, most talented filmmakers working today.

The short list you provided is filled with wonderful little titles that I love, and hopefully more people can become aware of them and add them to their own favorites. This is exactly why this site is really great.

For years, I had to justify to people why I liked foreign films over the Hollywood extravaganzas and I finally decided that their lack of interest no longer made me defensive.  It finally became a joke that I like to read my movies.  I too like a wide range of movies, not just foreign, but the comment you made about risk taking is far more prevalent in foreign films.  The required happy ending doesn't often happen with foreign films and to me that makes it more realistic.  Then again, I see things in a different manner.  What appeals to me in a film might very well be missed by someone else.  In another group I used the word gritty to describe a film and was challenged for that comment.  I suppose it's all a matter of chosen words, what we as individuals see, and how we articulate our impressions.

So now I watch, and read, my movies and cannot stand the dubbed versions.
I like almost every kind of film, with the exception maybe of horror movies.

Among my favourites are two little movies, by director Richard Linklater: Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.
Country of Origin is USA, but they don't feel like it. There's no happy ending, they just don't end  .
One is filmed in Praga, the other in Paris, and I like the european feeling.
If you like movies where they talk a lot, they could be your cup of tea.

Dove vivete in Italia?  That's about all I can get across in Italian that might not make you laugh.  I am Italian, here in the U.S. but my grandparents were all from Italy. I spoke Italian long before I learned English.

I have heard about the 2 films you mentioned and I will check them out.  So far everyone has said they are great, so all of you can't be wrong! 

Sorry to hear that all the films are dubbed.  As I mentioned before, I just can't stand it when they do it that way.  I spend more time watching the actors mouths and how the words just don't match!
