Topic: Is Kathy Bates a Good Actress

Personally I think she's one of the best ever.  When I watch her play I never see her, I always see her character.  She was scary as hell in Misery, her face and eyes brilliantly conveyed the insanity of her character.  Her performance in "Dolores Clairbone" was equally brilliant IMO, from the very first moments of the movie I knew that the whole life of her character has been filled with guilt from doing something wrong that she had no choice but to do.

Even in a crappy blockbuster like Titanic there is truth in her character that is above that of other actors.

I must officially protest against the voter who believes Kathy Bates is an average actress.  I respectfully request that an investigation is opened immediately and...........wait a minute, I can't do that......this is my board .......bummer !

I think she's brilliant. As I mentioned in the Tom Hanks thread, watch Kathy Bates in Dragonfly acting next to Kevin Costner. This magnifies her brilliance and shows what a cardboard cutout Kevin Costner is. I think she always does a terrific job and I wish she had more leading roles.

I think she's brilliant. Of what I've seen of her so far, her protrayal of Miss Hannigan in the 1999 version of Annie is marvelous. As is, obviously, her turn in Misery. But, the one performance, for me, that stands out, is The Unsinkable Molly Brown. She just took possession of the role, as she does for many roles, but considering what she had to work with, it really shows what she can do as an actress.

She is great. One of those I can't really remember liking, but when I watch her, she's very good indeed. It must be as Eric says, that you remember the character more. I'd never watch a film just because she's in it, but I'd recognise that its quality rating must have risen a few notches. I particularly liked her in About Schmidt.
