DVD Profiler - TV series
« on: July 02, 2007, 04:46:59 PM »
Some of you may have seen my questions about disc profiling of TV Series in DVD Profiler.  I didn't really like where the rules are heading on that, I think it's wrong to allow/request redundancy of data just to accomodate every one but if that's what they want.....

Personally I'm not gonna go this way.  I don't want to repeat regular cast/crew members in every episode if they appear in every one of them.  Since it doesn't match what it seems to be coming to with DVDP I will not contribute them.

Here's how I do it.

Box Set: Contains any cast/crew member that has ben part of EVERY episode contained in that set.  As an example, I'm working on "Fame - The Complete First Season" right now, all the kids and most of the teachers are credited at the beginning of every episode and they appear in each of them so I will put them at the Box Set level.

Discs: Using episode dividers, I only lists those that participated in specific episodes.

This way, when I double-click an actor name, depending where it shows up in my collection (Box set profile or child profile) I will know if the character appeared in every episode or was more random.

I do NOT copy the entire episodes cast and crew to the box set profile.

I'm posting this for people to know that I will gladly share my profiles if ayone likes the way I do them

Available soon:

Fame - The Complete First Season
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Season 1, Volume 1
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Season 1, Volume 2
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Season 2, Volume 1

If I actually bothered to do cast lists (I hate doing those, especially for TV series), I would be doing them somewhat like you are. Thing is, I don't use child profiles for my TV series, so I'd have the main cast, repeated cast at the top, and then dividers for each episodes.

As it stands now, I just don't bother. I accept the cast list as they are now, whatever that may be, and if I ever come around to it, I'll do them the way I like, but I doubt it. I don't really care enough about knowing that Ashley Judd made her first acting gig in Star Trek TNG as Wesley's girlfriend. What I want to know is that Patrick Stewart played Capt Picard, <can't remember his name> played Commander Riker, etc.

First appearances are not that big of a deal for me either, I'm more interested in guest stars.  Like in TNG for instance, it's interesting to know that Steven Hawkins once played himself.

As for profiling the episodes per discs, it's only because it's easier to find a specific episode when you want to watch it again and it's not any extra work except creating the discs in DVDP.

To be honest, I don't use the cast function of DVDP at all. If I'm interested in a cast, I go to IMDb.

My reasons for that: Whatever Skipnet is saying, IMDb is accurate enough for me. Most of the time, my computer is running when I'm at home and when my computer is running, my browser is running. Actually, I have a PC and a Mac and currently both are running and on both a browser is open. Therefore IMDb is fast and easily accessible. Another reason is that DVDP only shows those movies that I've got in my collection but when I look up an actor I want to see all his appearences and not only those on movies I own. And then there is still this "common name" problem which IMHo will still take a while until all actors are "common-named".

That's one thing that always bothered me too.  I also use IMDB a lot.

Me too, which is exactly why I have an HTML Window right into Profiler that loads the IMDb page for the movie, and another one for the Wikipedia page

It's like Sodom and Gomorrah in here! References to porn, pictures of naked women and now IMDb!  :hysterical:

As I said before on Invelos, I use the site all the time as well.

Sebastian,

You mind explaining how you did that and also would you mind posting a screen shot of what your profiler screen looks like? I am very curious as how others have their profilers set up...

I'll be happy to!

Here's a screenshot of my current DVD Profiler layout:

If you're interested, here's a link to download the layout file itself:
RossRoy's Layout File

If all you want is add the IMDb and Wikipedia page to your own layout:
For Wikipedia: Wikipedia HTML Window
For IMDb: IMDb HTML Window

Just a quick note for the IMDb window.. The version I have in my layout file is a little different from the ones posted there. Basically, instead of <imdb>tt000000</imdb> or <imdb number=tt0000000>, mine is configured for <imdb=tt000000 />

If you have more question. Don't hesitate to ask.

That's not my way of thinking.  Mike either used the search function to find what he was looking for or was just checking the forum and found something of interest.  As a forum administrator I think it's nice to see newcomers showing enough interest in the site to feel it worth to check what has been discussed before.

I fully agree with that line of thought!  ;D
