I could go out to dinner and a movie, enjoy the company of friends and spend around $100.

Or, I can spend the same amount on a huge stack of TV series that I remember loving when they aired. My friends bring pizza and watching the DVDs are just as much fun.

Once the dinner and movie is over, I don't have anything to show for it.

But, with the DVDs, I have a pile of wonderful movies. Plus, if I don't think I'll watch them again I pass them on to someone else to enjoy.

See I know how to qualify my insanity to make it seem logical..or maybe it is just easier to blame Hal!

That sounds perfectly logical to me.
Also, blaming Jon works well for me. :D

I should finally break into my Death Note set as well once back in Taiwan next week. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, do that :)
I am curious what you think of it compared to the movies. Maybe I even get around to continue my comparison if there is interest.
Well, I did it ;D

I have so far watched the first three discs. It's been a while since I last watched the movies (added the Blu-rays to my Wish List, this seems upgrade-worthy) , but the story so far seem to match the movies quite closely. They just take much more time to develop everything; like: there was nearly an entire episode of walking and talking between Light and a soon-to be victim. It's the third disc where things started to deviate a liitle heavier, with Light and L now attending college and

For the most part it's actually a thriller or mystery story, with only one single supernatural element thrown in. I highly enjoy how they add the trains of thought of both opponents, making it lots of fun to follow the cat-and-mouse game.

The animation is often static, but not to a disturnig degree. There is almost always some little movement thrown in. Occasionally there will be an actual still image and the movement is only provided by the camera tracking or zooming. It is never irritating though and every once in a while there is a truly beautiful shot as well.

I am looking forward to continue watching this next week.

I also found out there is another spin-off available. It's still an anime, but showing the story from Ryuk's point of view. I added this also to my Wish List.

I only know of two movies, which are more like flashback episodes. They essentially show again the anime with some alternate shots. I only have seen the first one and never bothered to check out the second one.

I might want to be careful then... They are these:
Death Note: Re-Light, Vol. 1 - Visions of a God (2009)
Death Note: Relight 2 - L's Successors (2009)

I have finished mone more disc yesterday and am a little "shocked". If memory serves then the point in the story I am currently at is about half way through the second movie, yet it's not even the mid-point of the series yet.

I am very excited!

edit.
I bothered to check a review on Amazon and it indeed mentions that these two movies are kind of the abridged version of the 37 episodes. I might want to skip on them...

I haved finished watching the Death Note anime series.

The movies apparently cut out two majopr plot section, which for the purpose of the movies was a good idea and well done. Otherwise they would have to make three or four instead of two films and it would have become quite messy in that format.

I must admit that I didn't enjoy the second half of the series not quite as much as the first; maybe because I had seen the movies first...? The plot section with the Yotsuda company seemed almost pointless and the final plot section has rather confusing bits and drags out too long. this may be faithful to the manga though.

The final 5 episodes are really great again. How the noose slowly tightens and we get to wonder who will win at the end.

My Blu-rays of the movies should arrive today and I will make sure to watch them very soon.

I got all the M*A*S*H episodes when they came out in the individual seasons... so never got the bonus disc that you got with yours. But the show is definitely worth it! :)

With the addition of...

I now have 137 Completed Series!

Pete, have you ever considered opening your own rental?  You have more DVDs than either of the two in my area
I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

Not a chance! I managed the local video store here for years... so I know what shape they are in when just anyone can rent them out... and that is when  you actually get them back! Bad memories!  :P

And my wife wonders why I get so defensive when says things like, "We have Blockbusters in our house".

That is cool... I have the original movie also that I bought separately. It is only the bonus discs for the series I don't have. It was released separately with just the series finale... but as of yet it has remained priced a bit to high to buy just for the bonus discs. I will if the price drops down far enough though.
