Here a couple of recommendations to get this started.

1. Breaker Morant see:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080310/

2. Picnic at Hanging Rock:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073540/

Both highly recommended.

Telecine,
Both excellent movies.  Breaker Morant was one of  Mel Gibson's first serious dramatic roles.  Superb movie in my humble opinion.  Another extremely good but overlooked movie with Mel was "Tim", also an Australian production if I am not mistaken.  However, let's not overlook some of Australia's comedic efforts as well.  I would highly recommend:

Danny Deckchair (Rhys Ifans one of the best in my opinion)
see:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337960/

and
Muriel's Wedding (Toni Collette)
see:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/

Both good fare if you ask me.

Nighthawke,

Yes Tim is an Australian film:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080024/

If you are interested in some comedies see:

The dish:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/

Based on a true story about how Australia was responsible for receiving and transmitting the live pictures of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.

If you liked Muriel's Wedding then you would probably also like:

Strictly Ballroom:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105488/

and

The Castle:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118826/

I love The Dish. I can't recommend it enough. The Castle is good too.

For my own Aussie recommendation, I'll say The Proposition. Oh my, it's brutal and raw, but very, very good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421238/

A couple of others that come to mind that I think are excellent are:

Careful, He Might Hear You
Rabbit Proof Fence

One that Madame Mole & I split our sides over was a comedy in which "Ballet teacher meets Aussie Rules".

Bloody funny! Can't remember the name; can anybody help?

Strictly Ballroom, perhaps?

Hmm... Maybe there was no ballet there... I'll have to watch it again.

If I may add a couple....

The brilliant Gallipoli

The gritty Chopper

Very disturbing Feed

Kokoda is very little known but a very good film

Cult classic Romper Stomper

But my favourite is the superb Shine starring Geoffrey Rush.

PS - I was brought up in Australia in the 70's and early 80's, and remember Paul Hogan in his own show with a stupid mate who wore a lifesavers hat. Anyone know the name of this series and whether it is available on DVD?

I remember that show too! We had it in Germany for a while. The IMDb entry says he only played in one episode, even though the show ran for 11 years :hmmmm:

The "The Paul Hogan Show, The Best Of DVD" is available in R4 at DVD Orchard. (If that link doesn't work, go to DVD Orchard and search for "Paul Hogan Show".) Atlantic DVD (why would they name a shop in Australia like that???) has it too. Amazon.co.uk yielded no results.

Spot on, thanks for that, exactly the series I meant with the gorgeous Delvene Delaney, she used to get my young heart racing  :P (Also seen in that wonderful Aussie classic 'The young Doctors')
