« on: December 24, 2008, 01:04:25 AM »
My dvd selling isnt't going very well, I've got a bunch of idiots thinking they can get 125 titles including 6 tv series and/or box sets for 300$.  I've got other peopel buying 2 DVD's for.........9$

I don't like getting rid of my collection and I don't won't the torture to go on for months so I'm wondering how much I could ask for the whole thing.  Can I get 2000$ canadian for everything that's in my Ordered list ?

Most of the time what we have never worth what we think it's worth. But if you have some OOP that can boost the price. Personally my collection worth between 10 and 15 thousands dollar, since I've some OOP stuff. But this is a personal evaluation and even if just one of my dvd have a value of 275$ I know that no one except a really big fan or collector will pay that. This is the problem with every collection we make whatever it is (sport cards, stamps, old money,...).

You can always register yourself at Amazon Marketplace, if you are in a hurry this is not the best solution but you will get a better price than with ebay or the local store.

The 2 for 9$ isn't too bad (depending of what), but the guys who had offer you 300$ are a joke (probably some local second hand store, no one here I hope).

It's just too bad that we don't share the same taste, since I can't help you with this...

I checked Amazon's Marketplace and I don't really consider it an option because they're shipping rates are way to low.  For 1 DVD shipped within Canada they give you 3.49$.  I checked on Canada Post's web site and the cost of shipping a parcel that half a pound an measures 7"x5"x1" which would be approximate dimensions of the box for 1 DVD is 11.19$

Unless I screwed up somewhere it doesn't make sense that Amazon would give you (and charge the buyer) only a third of the shipping costs.

Actually, if you'Re lucky, you can fit a DVD in a padded envelope and it still doesn't exceed the requirements for standard letter mail, so you could mail it for fifty-something cents. Of course, this is risky, because it just barely fits in the slot for thickness, so if it gets tried in the slot in the wrong way, it won't fit, but still, it is theoretically possible.

I don't remember what I used back then, but it cost about 5$ to send a DVD to the US in the smallest padded envelope that will fit a DVD (I bought them at Bureau en Gros)

I was thinking "small packages", I didn't think of envelopes for single dvd's. I'll look for that, thanks Seb.

You can use a yellow enveloppe, cut it to fit your dvd and put tape around it. I know that I've done this to return defective dvd to Amazon and the postage was less than 3$. You could use a cheap box too just like the one use by Caiman on Amazon Marketplace. Those boxes fit exactly the dvd case, but sometimes your case get broken (no a big problem for me, but some buyers can be not happy about this and give you a negative rating FWIW).

If it's any help, the Royal Mail changed their pricing to match size as well as weight a while back and they use a template similar to what you described. When I sell DVDs online, I've sent them all over the world as "Large Letters" in Jiffy bags sized 190mm x 260mm. The thickness limit for a LL is 25mm, which is just right for a DVD. Normally it costs £1.50, Recorded First Class in the UK and about £2.20 standard Air Mail elsewhere.

Paypal can do the postage for you in the UK and has a handy calculator. You enter the weight and where it's going and you can print the label.

I checked Canada Post's web site.  Standard Size is not option because of the 5mm thickness limit but I think "Oversize Letter" would be ok.  The max size is 380mm x 270mm x 20mm with a maximum weight of 500g.  The 20mm max thickness will be tight but if I choose the right envelopes I think it will be ok.

I'm gonna try to mail myself a dvd to see if it passes as Oversize Letter.  The rates are reasonable and that would allow me to sell my DVD's on Amazon.

Code: [Select]
                        Canada U.S.A. International
Up to 100 g             $1.15 $1.92 $3.7
Over 100g up to 200 g $1.92 $3.20 $6.40
Over 200g up to 500 g $2.65 $6.40 $12.80

Yes, a DVD in a Jiffy bag is a snug fit for the 25mm limit, so 20mm wouldn't do it. Cheeky sods! I never thought the Royal Mail could be accused of being better than someone else...
